MONOMAD CHALLENGE: Nazarenes, an image that awakens Faith and terror, Malaga, Spain

The first time I saw these characters, I thought: WTF?? Literally, because when I was very little I saw a movie where for the first time I encountered the displeasure of discrimination. I tried to find the movie, but I don't even remember the plot, I just remember these horrifying beings dressed in white with a hat.

Back then I asked my father what that was, they were carrying torches and walking en masse. That was the first time I heard those words that sounded like a cult in my head: that's the Ku Klux Klan, my dad told me. And he explained that it was a group of very bad people who discriminated.

That was all I knew until I was 13, where we studied Xenophobia as part of the curriculum of the subject: Geography, today my profession.

It may seem ignorant, but the truth is that I had no idea that there were other characters who dressed the same way. I saw them for the first time last year in Ibiza, in a small procession. But this year in Andalusia I have been able to see them with their different colors: red, black, white and green. These are called Capirotes, although they are also called penitentes, or nazarenos.

Last year I thought it was in very bad taste to see them, as they reminded me of that dreadful group. This year they explained to me that it was an ancient practice of the Church and what these people do is try to cleanse their sins by dressing like that and walking for endless hours through the different cities.

The kkk was born in the middle of the XIX century, the Capirotes were born in the Middle Ages. Although this dress would correspond to the church because it won hand in hand in the look, I think that given the impact that has had the other group and because of its role in the violation of human rights, should be banned the use of white clothing in the Capirotes.

This is my way of looking at it, and although I think in the first instance: Why should the Church make a change as a consequence of a group of violence? In the second instance I understand that yes, it would be an act of humility not in favor of the group, but in favor of the thousands and millions of people who have to watch this and who may be affected directly or indirectly.

Why do we have to watch this show? It even seems to me to be a very subtle way of inciting discrimination.

Anyway, this was one of the Holy Week processions in Malaga. The photos were taken in the Alameda Principal and although the theme was unpleasant, it allowed me to introduce it, something I really wanted to say.

Besides, I must admit, already focusing on what is the celebration of Holy Week, that these nazarenes or capirotes looked very nice. They were orderly and in spite of that clothing that isolates them, you could see their human gestures in their posture. In some images you can even see certain “expressions” on their non-face.

A very expensive moment that you get, a ritual like this certainly does not happen often. You are a smart photographer.

It had never occurred to me that Nazarenes resembled members of the KKK but now that you mention it it's quite understandable that someone would be frightened when seeing them for the first time especially if you're not from Spain or don't know anything about their traditions. It must be very strange to be walking around and suddenly see a group of guys with pointed hoods walking down the street without knowing what's going on, it's crazy that capirotes have existed since the Middle Ages, but the KKK only appeared in the 19th century and for some reason ended up with a similar outfit really doesnt pay justice, kinda mess up things for the church at least on the white ropes and pointing hats popular opinion, given all the negative refference that outfit can have today. I really enjoy your photos because you can see that these guys still look human even with their faces covered and everything, these traditions are strange because they can mean something totally different to those who practice them than to those who observe them and don't understand their religious significance.

Yes… I believe it’s a delicate topic and practice. I agree that some people could feel afraid when they see this groups, mostly if they have no idea about the Catholic tradition.

Thanks a lot for reading the post!
