Maintaining A Garden Is Not Easy!

I have been and still am cleaning my yard these days, but it's not as easy as I thought. Why is it not easy?

First of all, there are many different types of trees on my property, which I truly appreciate. However, their leaves come in various shapes and sizes. They need preparation for the upcoming winter. I've been raking primarily around my porch, but not all of it because it's impossible to clear out all the falling leaves. They are quite beautiful, but I had to rake around my house's exit to prevent mice and squirrels from being attracted to the warm leaves.

Secondly, my property has numerous hilly spots. So, when I need to trim some trees, I have to crouch or climb quite a bit. It's good exercise, but I must be careful not to strain my back.

Lastly, I have many wild plants on my property that I thoroughly enjoy watching and eating. I have lawn areas with various types of grass mixed with clovers, designated for our dog and vegetable garden within the fence. My husband takes care of mowing within the fence and keeps the lawn short. The remaining grassy areas have a more natural, wild garden style. To reach our berries, apples, and herb gardens, my husband created a small path using a whipper snipper. I take delight in the variety of seasonal wild plants and flowers that thrive there.

However, I can't simply allow them to grow unchecked. If I don't intervene, our house will be overrun by weeds. These weeds are tough and require some serious attention. Same with the trees. I hadn't pruned my cherry trees for a few years. Then, I noticed they had grown too tall to produce cherries. So, this autumn, I asked my husband to trim the cherry tree with me. It was a challenging task because we couldn't use a ladder on the hilly spot. Instead, we used a rope to bend down the tree and prune it. Phew, it was hard work. I don't mind trimming my small bushes by myself, but some of them have grown quite large, and I've realized I need to maintain them at smaller sizes.

While trimming my bushes and trees, I sometimes enter a meditative state of mind. Occasionally, I even speak to them, but most of the time, I enjoy the quiet moments by myself. After these moments, I was thinking about how Edward, from the movie "Edward Scissorhands," tended to his neighbour's bushes and trees. I may not be as artistic as he is in my gardening but I hold deep respect for gardeners. In Japan, there are traditional gardeners who wear special socks called Tabi to climb tall trees using bamboo ladders. I've even considered acquiring Tabi for my own gardening adventures.

庭の手入れは簡単ではないです！

ここ最近は庭の手入れに追われています。思うよりも簡単ではないです。なぜ、簡単ではないかというと…、

まず、家の敷地内にはいろいろな種類の木々が生えていて、とても感謝です。ところが、秋になるとさまざまな種類や大きさの落ち葉がひっきりなしに落ちてきます。どの木も冬支度をしているようです。玄関周りをときどきはいて掃除しているのですが、全部落ち葉をきれいにするなど到底不可能です。とても綺麗な落ち葉なのですが、ネズミやリスが暖かさを求めて玄関周りの落ち葉に集まってきては困るので、ある程度は掃除する必要があります。

次に、我が家の敷地にはけっこう小高くなっている部分があります。木の手入れをするときはそこをしゃがんだり登ったりしなければなりません。いい運動になるのですが、腰を痛めないように気をつけています。

最後に、敷地内にはたくさんの野生の植物が生えていて、鑑賞したり食べたりを楽しませてもらっています。柵の中には犬が走りまわるための場所と野菜の畑があるので、芝生（一種類の草ではなくクローバーなどいろいろな種類の混合）を刈って短く保つよう、定期的に主人が管理してくれています。柵の外はいろいろな種類の草花がある程度自由に生えるようにしています。ベリー、リンゴやハーブを取るために主人がスニッパーで刈って小さな道を作ってくれます。

たくさんの草花に囲まれて暮らすのは楽しいのですが、雑草を管理しなければ、あっという間に家の周りが雑草で覆われてしまいます。雑草はタフですね。木々も同じく、ある程度の手入れが必要です。さくらんぼの木を数年そのままにしておいたところ実のなりが悪く、やはりきちんと剪定しなければいけないのだと思いました。木が小高い場所にあってハシゴをかけられないので、主人に手伝ってもらい、ロープで引っ張って剪定をしました。ふぅー、かなりの重労働でした。そのほかの短い木は自分で選定できるのですが、短いと思っていた木も放っておくとかなりの大きさに成長していましたので、ある程度の大きさを保つ必要があると改めて思いました。

木々の剪定をしているとき、だいたい私は無になります。ときどき木に話しかけたりするのですが、たいていは自分の瞑想時間を過ごしています。この間は、ふと映画シザーハンズの主人公のエドワードの剪定ぶりを思い出しました。あの映画のように我が家の庭の木をかわいらしくしたいとは思いませんが、庭師さんのことはとても尊敬します。日本の伝統的な庭師の方たちは足袋をはいて竹のはしごを登って庭仕事を素早く行いますよね。すごい技術です。家の庭仕事にも足袋をはきたいと思いました。
