How Can I Protect My Vegetables from Animals? Not with a Realistic Owl Decoy!!🦉

Well, my garden is doing okay, but there are constantly many invaders in the garden beds in both the front and back yards. Pretty birds such as blue jays, robins, and many others come to eat seeds, worms, and whatever else they can find. Squirrels and chipmunks are also incredibly quick eaters.

Fortunately, deer and bears don't come into our yard because of the fences and trees. Cats are always trespassing in our backyard, but coyotes and deer rarely visit our property. My neighbour told me that she once saw a bear trying to eat compost from her neighbour's green compost bin. That neighbour used to run an Airbnb, and sometimes the guests didn't dispose of their garbage properly. My neighbour also runs an Airbnb, and occasionally, some guests leave garbage outside, so raccoons sometimes make a mess of it. Fortunately, there's enough distance between our properties that the raccoons don't come to our yard.

Back to my garden! The vegetables are growing well, but the birds and squirrels keep coming to eat them, so we had to do something about it. My husband wanted to buy a realistic owl decoy because many local people put them in their gardens.

This photo shows one of my favourite gardens in our area. I call it "the farmhouse." The owner grows wonderful vegetables every summer and autumn. His garden is always beautiful and impressive. Can you spot the owl in the back of the picture? I'm perfectly fine seeing it from a distance.

My husband immediately went to the hardware store and bought a gray-and-white wobbling owl. To be honest, I was already a little worried about putting an owl decoy in our garden because they make me uncomfortable. As soon as he walked into the house carrying the wobbling owl, I screamed! I absolutely hated it. It looked creepy, scary, and somehow even a little silly. I almost cried and got goosebumps all over my body.

I really tried to accept it, but I simply couldn't. I even tried to figure out why I disliked it so much. The funny thing is, I actually love real owls. Real owls often visit our backyard, and I sometimes hear them at night. They're beautiful and majestic animals. But the fake owl looked so creepy! Before giving up completely, I decided to do a little experiment.

First, I asked my husband to place the owl on top of the fence in the corner of the garden. I thought maybe I could get used to it through a little "shock therapy." Well... that didn't work at all. I realized I couldn't handle seeing it every morning and every evening when I took my dog outside. I didn't want to start every day with a little heart attack! So I gave up.

My husband kindly took it back to the hardware store to return it. When he returned it, the cashier asked why. He simply replied, "It worked too well." The cashier looked at him twice and asked, "What do you mean?"

He explained that it had scared me, instead of the birds. The cashier and the customers waiting behind him all laughed. I felt a little embarrassed when I heard the story later, but I really appreciated my husband's effort.

Instead, he bought another solution for me. The shiny bird-repellent decorations are perfectly fine. I really do like owls, just not the creepy wobbling fake ones!

After we installed the shiny decorations, whether by coincidence or not, I've hardly seen any birds hanging around the garden beds so far, except for woodpeckers that keeps pecking at our fence.

I also noticed that the owner of "the farmhouse" uses shiny disposable aluminum pie plates in his garden. They sparkle in the sunlight and make noises that help scare away animals.

That reminded me of my grandfather. When he had his vegetable garden, he used old CDs to keep hungry crows away. We don't own any CDs anymore, so we wondered where we could even find some. Maybe a second-hand store, we thought.

Then, the other day, while walking our dog, we noticed some leftover garbage by the roadside after garbage day. Among them were two scratched-up old CDs. We immediately thought about our garden!

The CDs were actually pretty cool. One is a classic hits album, and the other is an old country music album by Brent Williams. I'd never heard of him before, so I looked him up. As I'm writing this blog, I'm actually listening to his music. Hmm... Canadian country music.

I've noticed that local people really love country music. Whenever I hear live music, turn on the car radio, or witness my neighbour's annual summer music festival, there's almost always country music playing. It makes perfect sense, though we live in the countryside! The beautiful scenery, the peaceful atmosphere, and the short but wonderful summer all seem to match country music perfectly.

It actually reminds me of the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? George Clooney was so cool in that film. I love the Coen Brothers' movies, and I especially love their soundtracks.

Anyway, my garden is now protected by shiny decorations, old country music CDs, and the beautiful evening sunlight reflecting off them every day. It's much better than that scary, creepy wobbling owl! Hopefully, the animals will choose other parts of our property instead. They're welcome to enjoy the flowers, wild plants, and worms there as much as they like!

どうやって畑の野菜を動物から守るか？リアルな見た目のフクロウは勘弁！！🦉

さて、私の庭は今のところ順調ですが、庭と裏庭の畑には、いつもたくさんの侵入者がやって来ます。ブルージェイやロビンなどのかわいらしい鳥たちをはじめ、いろいろな鳥が種やミミズなど、食べられるものを探しにやって来ます。リスやシマリスも、とても食べるのが早いのです。

幸い、フェンスや木々のおかげで、シカやクマが庭に入ってくることはありません。一方で、裏庭には猫がいつも勝手に入ってきますが、コヨーテやシカが私たちの敷地に来ることはめったにありません。来るとしてもごくたま〜にです。近所の方が、お隣さんのコンポスト用の緑色のゴミ箱をクマがあさろうとしていたのを見たと話してくれました。そのお隣さんは以前Airbnbをしていて、ときどき宿泊客がゴミをきちんと片付けなかったそうです。

実は、うちの隣もAirbnbをしていて、たまに宿泊客がゴミを外に置いたままにしてしまうことがあり、そのせいでアライグマがゴミを荒らしてしまうことがあります。でも、私たちの家とは少し距離があるので、幸いアライグマはうちまでは来ません。

さて、庭の話に戻ります。野菜は順調に育ってはいるのですが、鳥やリスが次々と食べに来るので、何か対策をしなければなりませんでした。主人は、多くの地元の人たちが庭に置いている、本物そっくりのフクロウの置物を買いたいと言いました。

この写真は、私がこの地域で一番お気に入りの庭の一つです。勝手に「農場のうち」と呼んでいます。ここのご主人は、毎年夏から秋にかけて素晴らしい野菜を育てています。庭はいつ見ても美しく、見事です。写真の中央にフクロウがいるのが見えますか？ これくらい遠くから見る分には、全然平気なのですが…。

主人はすぐにホームセンターへ行き、灰色と白色の首がユラユラ動くフクロウを買ってきました。正直に言うと、私は最初から庭にフクロウのデコイを置くことに少し抵抗がありました。あまりいい感じがしなかったからです。そして主人が、そのユラユラ揺れるフクロウを持って家に入ってきた瞬間…私は思わず悲鳴を上げました！本当に気持ち悪かったです。気味が悪くて、怖くて、しかもどこかおかしな感じまでしました。泣きそうになり、全身に鳥肌が立ちました。

何とか受け入れようと努力しましたが、どうしても無理でした。どうしてこんなに嫌なのか、完全に拒絶する前に自分なりに分析もしてみました。実は、本物のフクロウは大好きなのです。裏庭にもよく来ますし、ときどき鳴き声も聞こえます。本物のフクロウはとても美しく、神秘的な生き物です。完全に諦める前に、一度だけ実験してみることにしました。

まず、主人に頼んで、庭の隅のフェンスの上にフクロウを置いてもらいました。ショック療法のように、慣れれば平気になるかもしれないと思ったのです。でも…、
全然ダメでした。毎朝、毎晩、犬を連れて外に出るたびにあれを見るなんて、とても耐えられませんでした。毎日、小さなショックのような思いをするのは心臓によくありません。ということで、やっぱり諦めました。

主人は親切にも、そのフクロウをホームセンターへ返品しに行ってくれました。返品すると、レジの店員さんが理由を聞いたそうです。主人は一言、「効きすぎました」と言いました。店員さんは不思議そうな顔をして、「どういうことですか？」と聞き返したそうです。

そこで主人が、「鳥ではなく、妻が怖がってしまったんです」と説明すると、店員さんも、後ろに並んでいたお客さんたちも、みんな笑ってしまったそうです。あとでその話を聞いた私は少し恥ずかしかったですが、それでも何度も往復してくれたことがありがたいです。

代わりに夫は別の対策グッズを買ってきてくれました。キラキラ光る鳥よけの飾りならまったく平気です。本当にフクロウ自体は好きなのです。ただ、あのユラユラ揺れる偽物のフクロウだけは無理でした！

それを取り付けてからは、偶然かもしれませんが、今のところ花壇の周りには鳥をほとんど見かけなくなりました。相変わらずフェンスをコンコンつついているキツツキだけはいますが。

それから、「農場のうち」のご主人が、庭でアルミ製のパイ皿を吊るしていることにも気付きました。太陽の光を反射してキラキラ光り、風で音が鳴るので、動物よけになっているようです。

それを見て、家庭菜園をしていた祖父のことを思い出しました。祖父は、畑でカラスよけに古いCDを吊るしていたのです。でも、今の私たちの家にはCDなんてありません。どこで手に入るんだろう、 リサイクルショップかな？などと話していました。

すると先日、犬の散歩中に、ゴミの日のあと道路脇に残されたゴミの中から、傷だらけの古いCDを２枚見かけました。私たちはすぐに、庭に使える！と思いました。

そのCDが意外とかっこよかったんです。１枚はクラシックヒット集、もう１枚はカントリーアルバムで、どちらもブレント・ウィリアムズという歌手の昔のアルバムでした。私はこの歌手をまったく知らなかったので調べてみました。そして今、このブログを書きながら、その音楽を聴いています。なるほど…、カナダのカントリーミュージックですね。

この地域の人たちは本当にカントリーミュージックが大好きだなぁと感じます。生ライブ演奏を聴くときも、車のラジオをつけるときも、ご近所さんが毎年開催している夏の音楽イベントでも、ほとんど必ずカントリーミュージックが流れています。でも、それも納得です。ここは田舎ですから。美しい景色、のんびりとした空気、そして短くても素晴らしい夏。そんな暮らしには、カントリーミュージックがとてもよく似合うのだと思います。

なんだか映画「オー・ブラザー！」を思い出します。あの映画のジョージ・クルーニーは本当にかっこよかったです。私はコーエン兄弟の映画が大好きで、特にサウンドトラックを聴くのが好きです。

というわけで、今、私の庭はキラキラ光る鳥よけの飾りと、古いカントリーミュージックのCDが、夕日に照らされて美しく輝く光に守られています。あの怖くて不気味なユラユラフクロウより、ずっといいです！動物たちは、できれば敷地内のほかの場所を訪れてくれるといいなと思います。花や野草、ミミズなどは、どうぞ好きなだけ楽しんでください！
