End-of-Summer Garden Photos

The temperature dropped, and we’ve had rainy days this week. It’s good to have rain for nature, but the autumn rain makes the temperature lower little by little, day by day. This is the opposite of the spring rain situation, and it isn’t a happy sign for nature.

In my garden, and in other places near my house, I notice the end-of-summer scenery in my area. Autumn nature is pretty and beautiful. Wabi-sabi is such an amazing moment.

This is the sunflower in my garden. They are doing very well this summer. Can you see the bee in the middle of the sunflower? It is sleeping in it. It’s a wonderful, soft bed for the bee, I think. We have at least five or six sunflowers in our garden, so the bees can find fluffy beds every day.

The corn is small, but it is tasty. It is doing very well and producing delicious yellow corn. The smell of the husks is so nice when I pick the corn fresh from our garden.

Yes, they are small, but they are beautiful. Yellow isn’t the only colour. They look white, pale yellow, and vivid yellow. The shapes are also not the same, but that’s a pretty sign of fresh, organic, homegrown corn.

I heard that my mother’s neighbour stopped growing corn because he couldn’t grow it big enough. I ate his corn when I visited my mother’s place a few years ago, and it tasted so good. He told us that the corn wasn’t big enough. I think the size isn’t so important for corn. I hope he will start growing corn again next year.

This year’s blackberries were so good. Their bushes grow in different places around my property. This year, the usual bushes didn’t produce any fruit. On the other hand, the bushes in the backyard did very well. The sunny spot on the hill in the backyard is the best spot for berries.

Birds also go there and eat the berries every day. There are plenty of berries, so we all shared them. My dog also enjoyed picking them with me as usual.

I wanted to throw this plastic cookie container into the recycling bin in the shed. I noticed that the berries were shining in the backyard. Before putting it into the bin, I decided to use it to pick the berries.

I made a small gift-like package like this. They look like jewelry. The snap peas were trying their best, but there weren’t many this year. The shiso leaves are doing very well. I’m thinking about making pickled shiso and turnip today.

By the way, I planted the chives a few years ago, and since then, I’ve had these thick, mature chives every year. They are so delicious and go really well with miso soup.

These are some ripe apples that had fallen to the ground when I visited the garden of the church museum. I felt such a sense of mottainai (what a waste!). Unfortunately, they had already started to rot, so I couldn’t pick them up. Even so, they looked so beautiful and gave off such a lovely smell.

夏の終わりの庭の写真

かなり気温が下がって、今週は雨の日が続いています。自然にとっては雨が降るのはいいことですが、秋の雨が降ると、日に日に少しずつ気温が下がっていくのがちょっと…。春の雨のときとは反対の現象で夏が近づきますが、秋の雨のように寒くなっていくのは、あまりうれしいサインではありません。

庭や家の近くのいろいろな場所で、この地域の夏の終わりの風景を感じるようになりました。秋の自然は、きれいで美しいですね。侘び寂びは、本当に素敵な瞬間だなと思います。

これは、私の庭のひまわりの写真です。今年の夏は、とても元気に育っています。ひまわりの真ん中にいる蜂が見えますか？ひまわりのベッドで眠っています。蜂にとっては、ふわふわで柔らかい、とても素敵なベッドなのではないかなと思います。

我が家の庭には、少なくとも５ー６本のひまわりがあるので、蜂たちは毎日、ふわふわのベッドを見つけることができます。

とうもろこしは小さいけれど、おいしいです。小さいながらも、黄色くておいしいとうもろこしをちゃんと実らせてくれています。庭から採れたばかりのとうもろこしの皮をむいたときにする香りが、とてもいい香りです。

そう、小さいけれど、とてもきれいです。黄色だけではありません。白っぽい色、淡い黄色、鮮やかな黄色などが混ざっています。形もそれぞれ違いますが、それも新鮮でオーガニックな、自家栽培のとうもろこしらしい、かわいいところだと思います。

母の近所の方が、とうもろこしを作るのをやめたと聞きました。十分に大きく育てることができなかったからだそうです。数年前に母のところを訪れたとき、その方のとうもろこしを食べたことがありますが、とてもおいしかったです。その方が言うには、「大きさが足りなかった」のがやめた理由の一つだそうです。

家庭用のとうもろこしの大きさは、そんなに重要ではないと思います。来年、また気を取り直してとうもろこしを育て始めてくれたらいいなと思います。

今年のブラックベリーは、とてもおいしかったです。ブラックベリーの茂みは、敷地のいろいろな場所に広がっています。今年は、いつもの場所の茂みには実がなりませんでした。

一方で、裏庭の茂みはとてもよく実をつけてくれました。裏庭の奥にある丘の、日当たりのいい場所が、ベリーにとっていちばんいい場所のようです。

鳥たちも毎日のようにそこへやってきて、ベリーを食べています。たくさん実っているので、みんなで分け合いました。私の犬も、いつものように私と一緒にベリーを摘むのを楽しんでいました。

このプラスチックのクッキーの空き容器を、物置にあるリサイクル用のゴミ箱に捨てようと思っていたところで、裏庭でベリーがキラキラしているのに気づきました。ゴミ箱に入れる前に、これを使ってベリーを摘んでみようと思いました。

こんなふうに、小さなプレゼントみたいなパッケージにしてみました。まるで宝石みたいに見えてきます。スナップエンドウも頑張ってくれていましたが、今年はあまりたくさん採れませんでした。シソの葉はとても元気に育っています。今日は、シソとカブの漬物を作ろうと思っています。

そういえば、数年前にネギを植えました。それ以来、毎年こんなふうに太くて立派なネギが育っています。とてもおいしくて、味噌汁にもよく合います。

教会の博物館の庭を訪れたとき、地面に落ちていた熟したりんごの写真です。目にした瞬間、「もったいない！」と感じました。でも、すでに地面で傷んでしまっていたので、残念ながら拾うことはできませんでした。それでも、とてもきれいで、あたりにはいい香りが漂っていました。
