We finally found a House ! - So let's start thinking about our Dream Garden...

avatar

Some of you have already heard the news, so this is a repeat for those of you, but I wanted to share with you again this great step forward in our project, as well as more information on the next steps...

As I expressed it in this recent article, I regretted not being able to participate as much as I would have liked in the HiveGarden community. But things are about to change - even if it will take some time to settle in ! I have already become patient over the years and I now know that if I have learned to be more patient, it is to take on projects of this scale...

Indeed, the signing is coming soon. After this one, we still have 2 months to wait and we will be able to be there probably in May or June. But it doesn't matter, because to give ourselves some perspective, it's good to know that we've been talking about the project for 3 years, looking at ads for over a year and visiting houses for about 8 months. So what's two months of waiting more or less ?

I might as well tell you straight away, the photo I used on the cover is not the one of the house, but it is a garden in this spirit that we would like...

IMG_9613 copy.jpg

IMG_9614.JPG

The two images above and the second pair that follows are from this visit to the Jardin de Kerdalo which we did this summer in Brittany. This garden is 16 hectares in size and is a constant inspiration to us as we were visiting it for the second or third time.

IMG_9615.JPG

EpGPgbzu7dNvERokAPA5tejTJZBdFe85Mvh6KFgPd79dAedE1Q6ao2qDXvTPMhS2fQW.jpg

Well, here we are talking about a real manor house with a huge plot of land whereas the house we are going to buy is much more modest and even if the land is already 2 hectares, everything remains to be done and that is our desire and the goal of this project... But here are some views of the garden and the land in its winter state and without maintenance so that you can see for yourself...

IMG_5761.JPG

IMG_5755.JPG

As you can see, apart from the small greenhouse, the small metal structure and the old vegetable garden area, there is a LOT of work to do ! But that's what makes me shiver with excitement :D

From here, two thirds of the land is even higher up the south-facing slope, which climbs to the edge of a large protected forest. On this side, normally we should not have any worries... But let's take a closer look.

IMG_5763.JPG

IMG_5765.JPG

Here we are, almost at the top of the small hill overlooking the house. There is a nice clear view and plenty of room to build the garden of our dreams ! The slope is more or less inclined in places and I think it will be ideal to make levels and alternate between steeper and sunny areas.

IMG_5769.JPG

Here is a view of the neighbour's orchard in which there seem to be more than thirty fruit trees already in full maturity... All around is the forest !

I am not yet able to show you a precise plan of the garden in its current form and our different versions, but I am working on it and will reveal it to you in the coming days. Indeed, a garden is above all a layout. But don't get me wrong, I'm not someone who wants to make plans and have reality fit perfectly with them. No, I like to plan to a certain extent and then let this reality dictate what is possible to do... or not.

But you can already expect plans seen from above and with the different zones schematized ;-) In the meantime, let me reveal some of our inspirations, and the way I would like to intervene here, on HIVE and in particular in this community that I have neglected for too long !

If you have any interest in gardens, you will have noticed mounds and systems related to the practice of permaculture. But first let's look at the definition as given by one of the French dictionaries :

A form of agriculture based on the principles of sustainable development, which aims to respect biodiversity and humans and which imitates the functioning of natural ecosystems. (It is energy and labour efficient.)
source

I have a very slight grasp of the principles of this practice and that is precisely what I would like to do here, i.e. to share little by little the fruit of my research, as it progresses and as I experiment more.

Indeed, the future of the urban garden seems to be becoming clearer and it seems likely that we will finally be able to grow a little for this season ! This will be an opportunity to try out a few things....

hugelkultur_bed_diagram.jpg
source

One idea is to make a classic permaculture mound, called "sandwich" or "lasagne" mound. I'll let you take a closer look at the diagram above...

Another project that will probably take more time, but which I would like to dedicate myself to, is the discovery of the principle of aquaponics which is very close to hydroponic systems. You can follow the links for each of the images and dig a little deeper into the subject. I would of course be pleased to receive your advice and experiences on the subject !

Afterwards, we could also talk about chickens, horses, a donkey, sheep and bees... But for the time being, that would be a bit too much to anticipate the subject and I don't want to rush into it. The idea of this article was to share with you our different objectives, what they are and how I would like them to appear more in this universe.

I hope you will be interested in this adventure and at the risk of repeating myself : your testimonies and suggestions are always welcome :) Thank you for reading !

I wish you an excellent evening, take good care of you and your loved ones,

@anttn

<3

Yes… so cool to be able to think about the garden now and make plans for it.
We talked about this for a long while and also the aquaponics, one thing I will implement in our future garden.
Have fun exploring it all 😎😊

Hahaha, yeeeah ! There's sooo much excitation around the corner ;D We are just reading plants books and watching some videos compulsively... Can't wait to start for real ! Almost feel like an old christians during the Roman empire, just after the conversion of the emperor, close to expressing my garden religion in plain sight 😂

Of course I hope to have you there when you'll be on your European tour ✌️!

If you want me to tell you more, the best part is that when we were looking in the area, at one point I got stuck on the eastern part of a forest and the funny thing is that this house was proposed to us by an estate agent and we didn't find it directly... Well, it's exactly where I thought it would be! Incredible, isn't it? I was already thinking about the power of focus and then the obvious power of the universe, but this is a great proof I think...

You can already look at the Perche region, I'll send you more details via Discord :-)

Genial!
But that's the most exciting part, like you je suis super impatiente de commencer à créer, tous les jours! :)

Your inspirations of that Brittany garden are really awesome; kinda like we want to grow too in the Sanctuary too; and mounds are super interesting, especially the wood trunks decomposing slowly and providing stable moisture; we can't wait trying these out on a bigger scale as well!
Following, looking forward to stay posted of your journey 🌞

This looks like a beautiful place to finally get to work with your project! Good luck and success!
Furthermore I'd like to share with you a concept for gardening invented in Bavaria, Germany. It's called the "3 zones garden" and is trying to take the principles of permaculture to the next level by putting it into an enclosed, circular, environment. They usually call their gardens "Hortus". I don't know if it's of any use for you, but here a link to the principles (unfortunately in German): https://hortus-netzwerk.de/der-drei-zonen-garten/
I'm pretty sure there is information available in English and maybe french too... but I don't have them available to share.
Happy growing!

Thanks you 😊 ! And also many for sharing that with me ! I heard a bit about it, but I will have to look closely to see if it's what I'm thinking about..! Permaculture is the best by its evident virtuous circles and inclusions of all types of living strategies. I will go and translate that 😉

I hope you had a pleasant weekend, take care and again, thanks you ✌️
