Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.07.13 /
Last week was quite a contrast—cool and mild throughout. Yesterday it rained, and the temperature stayed below 20°C. It seems we had a little break from summer. With the rain taking care of watering duties, I enjoyed a more relaxed pace.
Micro Balcony Update
The tomatoes on the balcony have been fruiting for quite a while now, and I find myself watching them each day, wondering "Will they turn red soon?" Some are beginning to show a slight orange tint. But I shouldn’t rush them, right? I’ll try to be patient 😉
Speaking of summer veggies, I spotted the first fruit on my beloved ”Bonsai Chili"! I love its name and size—it's perfect for the balcony. When dried, the red chilies have the ideal spiciness for my taste. A perfect 10 out of 10! This year, I’d like to let the plant mature and try overwintering it indoors.
And speaking of fruit—look at my yuzu, it's surviving! Watching it daily and taking weekly photos, I can clearly see it growing. I once heard a citrus farmer say on YouTube, "Everyone wants to grow lemons, but yuzu is actually the easiest citrus to grow," and now I understand why. It even survived its first winter out on the balcony. Things are going so smoothly that I’m tempted to get another yuzu tree 😁
Of course, gardening always brings unexpected moments. This year, I heard from the farmer growing shiso for my syrup that the plants weren't thriving. So last month, I hurried to start my own seedlings. None of the seeds I ordered from a seed company sprouted—perhaps they were over a year old (shiso is said to lose its germination rate drastically after just one year). The same issue might have happened at the farmer’s end, too.
Luckily, a Japanese friend who rents the neighboring garden plot had saved seeds from last year, and they sprouted beautifully! I’m hoping to harvest enough to make 50 bottles of syrup—or if I'm lucky, maybe even 100.
Maybe I’ll be able to share a tomato harvest update next week 😁
The “Klein” but Big Garden
This week, I drove to the garden once mid-week with some compost and seedlings. Last week, I had visited early in the morning and ended up with mosquito bites on my forehead and cheeks—so I was more cautious this time. Thankfully, this visit was bite-free and I could enjoy working in the cool morning air.
The seedlings I planted were leeks that I had been growing for a winter harvest. It's my family's winter favorite. If they all grow well, we definitely won’t be able to finish them all as a family… but I was already dreaming about it with a grin on my face.
I also planted a Savoy cabbage seedling that I rescued recently.
The raised bed is already shifting into an autumn-winter mode, giving off a slightly wistful feeling. Next week, I’ll cover it with insect netting to protect cabbages from butterflies and caterpillars and lovingly care for it until harvest.
The raspberries are in season now, and every visit to the garden ends with a happy handful to take home.
One batch of raspberries was turned into a compote for ice cream. Another time, my child wanted to bake them into bread, so we rolled them up in butter roll dough and baked them.
The blackberries are also starting to show some color—looking forward to those harvests too!
To-Do for Next Week
Now that spring and early summer have passed, I’m beginning to understand which parts of the garden are best suited for different crops, and how I want to tailor the space to fit my style. I’m thinking of converting a sandbox area—originally used by the previous garden owner who was a childcare worker—into more planting space.
Also, this isn’t quite a “to-do,” but I remember @shanibeer once commented about five-year gardening journals, and I thought it was such a good idea… Then Amazon sent me a sale notification, and well… I clicked. I’m now happily writing notes for my future gardening self.
That’s all from my garden this week. Wishing you all a lovely Sunday!
"Klein"
I have a free gift of fruit this week. I can't decide whether to get raspberries or cherries. Or maybe apricots if there are some in store. I miss seeing gooseberries and greengages, they feel like old fashioned fruits now. Lovely to see how your garden is progressing.
I didn't know greengages! So many tasty fruits and veggies to learn 😊 Talking about old fashion plants, once someone said my favorite broad beans were old fashion in Germany…
Yes, broad beans were considered old fashioned here, too, but I think chefs have been reviving them.

Wonderful Wonderful. Im proud of you
Thanks ☺️
Wow! The raspberries must be really delicious. And your child must be really happy to be able to harvest and bake the plant you have in your garden. Cool!
Another good thing is that berry bushes are really maintenance free 😉 They are wonderful and I'm glad that I rent garden this year.
Oh, wow! Nice to hear that.
I love the idea of making notes for my future self but I'd lose the journal :P - I do admire @goldenoakfarm for her note keeping! Perhaps I should try a five year journal, that's a good idea @shanibeer - I need to find one with mushrooms on the cover :P
I'd really like to try growing shiso as I"m always fascinated by new things and a Japanese friend of mine always tells me about it.
Mushrooms on the cover is really nice 🍄 I think about sewing a cover for it ☺️
I recommend Shiso. It is quite strong and tolerant. It grows not only in Japan but also in Germany too. Just many people don't know that the seed freshness is quite important to have good germination rate and good to be careful about it. You might be surprised with the new taste. I always find it difficult to explain the taste. I say mixture of mint, basil, cinnamon, ... but still cannot describe it well ;)
You have vegies and fruits to harvest now. These are organic to eat since they are from your garden. Thanks for the idea.
