Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 13 April 2025 /

Now that I've rented a garden (a Kleingarten, as they’re called here in Germany—klein means small, but it feels quite big to me...), I’ve changed the title of my weekly journal. When I first started writing these gardening updates, having a garden of my own was just a dream. It turns out that dreams do come true ☺️

Micro Balcony and Indoor Plants

On the balcony this spring, daffodils, tulips, and violas are in bloom, and the greenery is starting to fill in. It feels like a little heaven attached to our home.

Every year I think the same thing: planting bulbs is like investing in spring. I shared part of my investment results to people I met. Happy to see they liked the flowers. I’d love to plant lots of bulbs in the garden this autumn as well.

This weekend, my family is off to Berlin again—they won some kind of Harry Potter ticket—but I stayed home, happily working with plants and soil. There will be a gardening market at our local culture center at the end of the month, and I’ll be joining for the first time in a few years. The last time I was a seller, my daughter was still a baby, I think... I’ve been growing Shiso (perilla) from seed to offer Japanese plants at the market. I repotted them and now let them sunbathe in the bright evening light of our living room. Two more weeks to the plant market —grow well!

Last week, I finally got my hands on a Japanese maple at the spring plant market at the Botanical Garden in Berlin. I’ve always wanted one for the balcony—it reminds me of my home Kyoto Japan. In Germany, I’d seen beautiful potted ones outside restaurants and hotels. The vendor told me that the tree will grow to match the size of its pot, so I’ve started with a medium-sized container. Once I move some balcony plants to the garden, I’ll transfer it to a larger one.

Since I started my seed sowing a bit late this year, my summer vegetables like chili peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants are still small—but they're growing little by little. Every year I tend to sow too early, so maybe this timing is actually better. Learning by doing, that’s gardening 😉

The "Klein" But Big Garden

I visit the garden about once or twice a week to keep things in order. This week, my friend who rents the neighboring plot and I spent a good time with her while trimming back a wildly overgrown rose bush that must have spanned several generations 😅 We were so much in cutting tunnel so no photo for the strong rose bush...

My first-ever broad beans in the garden are coming along nicely so far—what a relief!

While trimming branches and clearing weeds, I started finding rhubarb popping up. It feels like a little treasure hunt. I wonder how big they’ll get? I suppose I should be forcing them, but I’ve been putting it off... That's first year.

I also picked up a bag of Steckzwiebeln (tiny onions that grow quickly and can be harvested by summer) from a local organic shop. Or rather, I’m still in the process of planting them. There are so many in the bag, it's almost like infinite onions! I wonder what everyone else who buys these does with them. It’s a shop in a residential area, so I can’t imagine most people have huge gardens. I’m thinking of planting some densely in a planter at home to grow them like green onions.

I also enjoy picnicking in the garden during breaks, and now that desire has evolved—I want to cook in the garden too. I’ve been slowly collecting outdoor gear, and recently a mess tin arrived. I think I have everything I need now, so I’ll try cooking rice over a fire soon. I can hardly wait!

Next Week's Garden To-Do

I thought it might help to jot down some notes here for what I’d like to get done in the coming week.

  • Sow seeds for goya, pumpkins, zucchinis
  • Finish planting the rest of the onions 🧅
  • Keep the Shiso well-sunned to grow strong
  • Continue trimming and weeding in the garden
  • Transplant fig, rosemary, bay, garlic chives, and other perennials into the garden
  • Finalize my planting plan 2025
  • Try cooking rice in the garden with the mess tin 🍚

So that’s my garden journal for now—or perhaps more of a foodie journal!
Thank you for reading, and wishing you all a lovely Sunday!

Learning by doing, that's gardening!

"Klein"

近所のオーガニックストアで売られていて気になっていたSteckzwiebel(玉ねぎの小さな球根で、成長が早く、今植えておくと夏に収穫できるらしい!)

Cooking outside is so much fun!

Do you put the Shiso outside on the balcony during the day?

I do so as my family comes back 😁 If there are extremely cold days, I may take them inside.

Yes, I remember cossetting my baby tomato plants - put them out on the balcony in the morning, bring them in in the evening as the temperature starts to drop! I kept my geraniums in the covered porch at the back for the winter, but there isn't enough sunlight for them now, so I have put everything out on the balcony while I am away for a few days. My friend told me the balcony on our houses has its on micro-climate, plants are away from any ground frosts that may happen ... we'll see if they have survived when I go back home 😂

Good luck Shanibeer ... or your plants! Every year I think about making a car for plant that follows sunlight at home 😁 Now I have some Raspberry Pi for @pupiko and getting ready for the experiment!
