Growing Own Cut Flowers - Early Summer /

avatar

Cut flowers add a touch of colors to our lives, but they tend to wilt within a few days, or at most a few weeks, and having cut flowers at home can be a costly habit. For me, cut flowers have always been something special because of this. In addition, I concern about the mass production of the cut flower industry and the fact that they are often transported from far away places.

Since I moved to Germany ten years ago and started gardening intensively, I initially focused on growing mainly edibles. However, in the last years, I realized the value of ornamental plants and I've also grown flowers. With own grown flowers, I feel more easy to have cut flowers. Actually for some plants it's good to prune them to make them bushy and make more flowers. I'm happy to have the pruned branches with flowers and I can reduce the financial burden 🙌

Yesterday, while doing maintenance at the community garden, I got some strawflowers, calendula and zinnias that had grown too tall. In the evening, my daughter and I arranged them on the dining table.

This morning I fond some lavenders were added from the balcony by my daughter. It made me smiling.

Another thing that made me smile was her drawing. She drew Zinnia in a base. I found it on her play corner in the living room. Well done, mini gardening friend!

So if you hesitate to buy flowers like me before, how about growing flowers in your balcony, garden or at a community garden if you don't have a personal gardening space. Even you can sow seed around a tree for example in a public space 😁

My recommendation in this season

  • Zinnia
  • Chrysanthemum (according to my experience some last for few weeks)
  • Strawflowers (you can make them dried flowers too)
  • Calendula
  • Lavender
  • Sunflowers

Happy gardening & enjoy cut flowers at home!

Thank you @bhattg & @indiaunited! Which kind of cut flowers do you have at home in India? I'm curious about it :) I don't have any memory about it as I was living in a university dormitory in India.

Thanks @maytom. I think it's great that every region has their own specialty. I have never had Zinnia as cut flowers in Japan and got to know it in Germany 😊 It's really popular here in this season. Interesting thing is that it's originally from Mexico as long as I remember right.

😁 great recommendations! My mom and I are planning to visit florist soon because we're starting our garden. We used to have Chrysanthemum around this month last year but they died really quickly. So I am unsure of getting them again. You have such a lovely bouquet!

I wish you and your mother have a good start of the garden!

The chrysanthemum I had could be not a typical one. They have smaller flowers with a lot of petals. I had this three times, also with purple color, were fresh for quite long :) (My edible chrysanthemum in balcony had flowers few weeks ago but they were there only for a week or a bit longer. It was shorter than the cut ones I had).

I've always wanted to have those edible ones for tea. I recall mine was also of that color and sizes. I'll try for the purple one, they might last longer? I hope 😆
