The old things were better.

Hello hivians. How did you spend this cold weekend? I hope it's ok. Although I know that many Central European friends have been a little frozen. And I thought that at this point of climate change we would no longer have these problems.

Walking through the Christmas market that they are starting to put up here, sooner and sooner. I saw many interesting things but today there was one phrase that interested me the most. "Things before were better." Is this true? I don't think that's true since the world progresses more or less and we have things that we couldn't even dream of before.

But then why do many people say this phrase? And not only older people who may feel a certain and logical nostalgia for their younger years. Not also young people say it. I think there are several reasons. One is that today quality things persist, not the most common products of the time, which have already disappeared. So it is a wrong comparison. If we compare it with today's quality products, perhaps we would not say that phrase.

But I think the main reason is the use of materials. Nowadays, there are materials like plastic or cardboard that are fantastic but have a very short useful life. If our grandparents hit a table by mistake, they sanded it and gave it a little varnish. It was like new. We cannot do that because the table would simply disappear with the sanding. There are many other examples but I don't want to bore you.
It's not that the products are worse, it's that they are another type of product and another type of society. Today we live in a consumer society and that is why we have consumer goods, not fixed goods.
