Reykjanestá - Climbing Places I shouldnt

avatar
(Edited)

Reykjanestá or Valahnúkamöl is an area in southwest Iceland, which is in the southernmost tip of Reykjanes peninsula. Like many locations on my last trip to Iceland, I didn't plan on visiting this location too. I just randomly found locations on the go from google maps that I had not previously seen on Reykjanes peninsula during my previous trips to Iceland.
This area is also on the mid-Atlantic ridge so it's very geologically active. There has not been an eruption for 700 years but experiences some regular earthquakes.

From there you can also see a small island in the ocean named Eldey island. This island has appeared from underwater eruptions and this area there is considered a separate volcanic system that is relatively active. Six submarine eruptions have been documented around this island in the last 1000 years, the last one happened in 1926.

Okay back to the Reykjanestá coast. This sure is one of the most scenic places you can find in Reykjanes peninsula. I was especially interested in seeing the coastal cliffs that you can find there.

I wanted to climb these cliffs to get a better view over the surrounding areas. I noticed that the cliffs were fenced off and a sign said that the cliffs are unsafe due to some earthquake that cause big chunks of these cliffs to fall off into the water below, also the cliffs are cracked in places.
The fences although were just more like notifying measures, didn't prevent anyone from actually climbing them. Unfortunately, I am one who likes to take risks like this so I climbed to the top.

Some awesome views appeared from above. I went quite close to the edge to get views down into the water. I did see some cracks yep. Even though I like to take those risks for the experiences, this does not mean I'm stupid. I don't step where it clearly looks dangerous af. Well, most of the time at least. Got one story where I crossed that line but this is a story for another post from another location.

It suddenly started to rain a lot, you can see it in the photos.

Sorry for the blurry shot. My lens was soaked.

I did also get a great view of the Reykjanes Lighthouse + a lovely shot of it.

I love this kind of places and that's why I tried my best to reach Ireland in December but my flight was cancelled so I'll have to postpone the meet with this type of landscapes for now 🥺 but your pictures remind me that I have so much to see out there!

Did you mean Iceland or Ireland ? 😄 If in Ireland then you can actually find some similar places to this there to yep.

Your flight was cancelled entirely and they didnt offer you a new flight asap?
Thats some bad airliner company.

Snap, I've always had a problem mixing Iceland with Ireland. My trip was to Ireland but yeah they both have similar landscapes and names as well haha.

They did offer a new flight but it was in a different period and the opportunities for renting a place where to stay were out of my budget so I'll have to postpone this :(
