Picnic on the Interesting Rock formations

I recently made a post about one of my favorite lakes in Iceland, Lake Kleifarvatn that I have been visiting many times over the years. On the same evening, we made one more stop there on our way to our accommodation. This time with some wraps we bought from some gas station to eat there.

We decided to go to a beach area we had not been to before and walk a bit further on some cool-looking rocks.

I thought for a while... How do those rocks come to look like that? Obviously, these are from a volcanic origin but those lines and smooth rocks are not the result of moving lava flow. I'm not an expert but I think I know what makes these look like that.

You can see layers that are a result of several different eruptions in the past. The lines most likely come due to wind erosion over a long period of time and smooth rock formations are a result of water erosion, waves from the lake.

Here you can see the smooth rock formations. We sat on those smooth formations and ate the warps on it.
You might ask, how come is it a water(wave) erosion so high up from the lake? The water level of the lake used to be a lot higher in the past. Lake Kleifarvatn has lost its water level and has been losing it for a long time. There are some cracks under the water's surface where more water drains away than comes into the lake. If I remember correctly then a strong earthquake made these cracks open under the surface.

I have pretty much fully explored the southwest and north end of this lake over several years. I would love to go to the eastern side too but it's a bit hard to reach, requires a hike and no trail really goes there. I will go there at some point tho!
