Hiking to the Top of Pico Bronco

(Edited)

This is the last and the best hike I did on the island of Porto Santo. The trail is located on the northern tip of the island. It's a great trail that goes through a scenic mountain region, through several viewpoints, and to the top of Bronco Mountain. The mountain itself is not that high, only a bit more than 300m in elevation but that's straight from the sea next to it so the view are still spectacular all around.

We drove our quad bike right to the trailhead that starts a bit off the paved road.

The trail is not too steep but there are a couple of sections with steep(er) climbs and stairs.

All the photos are taken with my girlfriend's DSLR camera because I broke mine as I described in a previous post. Shes camera is a total crap so the photos are not that great. Fortunately, you don't see these in full screen so it's probably fine here. Overall it doesn't handle higher ISO at all and it was so frustrating to me.

The trail was about 5 kilometers long and we started quite late in the evening, the sun was already setting so we didn't have all the time in the world to reach the top.

Can you spot the trail on the mountainside? It's quite a camo.

Looking at hills opposite us appear to have some cascades. It was probably once used as agricultural land but is now abandoned.

The lighting was really nice with those clouds and the sun behind the tip of the mountain.

When we were halfway through our hike. the view was spectacular over the seascape and the hills right next to it.

The trail went along to the narrow cliffside and wooded area.

A cool rock in the middle of the ocean.

We found an altar of some kind. I have no idea what it's for. There looks to be a date on the plate. Maybe someone died in this place, fell down a cliff, or something.
IMG_4075.JPG

Finally, we reached another lookout area with tables and a place to camp with awesome views.

No time to spend. It was already getting dark and we still had to get to the top and hike back too.
IMG_4079.JPG

Not much later we reached to the top. There was this smooth area and we were able to take some photos in every direction.

Sorry that the photos are of really bad quality. It was getting too dark and this camera was fully unable to handle it.

We spent there about 5 minutes looking around and taking in the surrounding scenery. It was now time to start hiking down. I didn't take any more photos because it was useless. Fortunately, I had already gotten photos of almost anything I wanted to. It took us around 40 minutes to get back down to the quad bike and by that time it was fully dark outside.

Overall, I can tell that this was my favorite hike on the island. The trail was interesting and the views were gorgeous. If you ever travel there and wonder about what hike to do with your time then definitely choose this one. The correct name for this trail is PS PR1 Vereda Pico Branco and Terra Chã.
I'm glad that I'm the first one doing posts on Pinmapple about this island and can tell about it here.

This place is probably the same in the winter too. Maybe temps are a bit lower but there doesn't exist winter.

It sounds like you had an amazing hike on Bronco Mountain! The photos you shared are beautiful, and I can definitely see why you enjoyed the trail so much. The views look spectacular, and the landscape is so varied.

I'm sorry to hear that your girlfriend's camera didn't handle the higher ISO well, but I think the photos still capture the beauty of the hike. I'm glad that you were able to get some good photos, even though it was getting dark.

Thanks! It was a great hike yes.
Well, have to use what I can. The worst would be not getting photos and memories recorded at all. I can always use my phone too but I'm no a fan of phone photography.
