Sunday Stamps & Coins ~ “Narwhal”

Let’s take a journey back to 1968. One of my favourite stamps is this 5 cent “Narwhal”. Such a cool looking stamp of this great creature. The male Narwhal has this long protruding tusk which makes it very unique amongst the whales. These guys can be found roaming in the arctic Canadian waters, as well as the Greenland and Russian waters. In the second photo we have a couple of “Gray Jays” perched on a branch. These birds love to hang out in the forested areas of Canada (and other countries too). The third stamp commemorates the 200 year anniversary of the first weather observation, dating back before Canada even became a nation (1867).
Now for the coin portion. Here is a 1976 Canadian half dollar, and get this, it doesn’t even have a trace of silver in it! Back in 1968, they decided to reduce and get rid of the silver content of coins, replacing the silver with nickel (I’m sure most of you know this already). So this coin is worth only a half dollar or 1.5 Hive.

That sounds like a fantastic stamp! The narwhal is often called the "unicorn of the sea" because of that distinctive tusk, and it's fascinating to see such a unique creature featured on a stamp. 🦄🐋 The 5-cent "Narwhal" stamp must be a real treasure for your collection, @daveks !

It's nice to know some interesting information on Narwhal and Gray Jays. The long tusk of the male Narwhal, is that a tooth?

I still prefer the Narwhal stamp, it's beautiful with those blue colors and that horned whale. 1968, such a rich history to that one too.

I like the narwhal stamp too, it was really well done and the image balances nicely. The two birds has some great artistry as well. Too bad the coin is from after they removed silver, it's still nice though. So everything pre 1968 still had silver?
1967 and older had silver. Starting in 1968 they reduced the amount, then cut it out completely in 1969. That half dollar is worth half a dollar.
