Today I woke up early, before the sunlight made an appearance, but the fog was there and it seemed that a whitish, dense light floated between the backyards and gardens, and especially over the town itself. It would be around 5:00 AM when I found myself looking at all this atmosphere that has a certain magic, and while I sipped my hot coffee, I made myself the proposal to go out into the streets to walk and take photos, forgetting a bit and ignoring some errands which I had to do early...

Hoy desperté temprano, antes de que la luz solar hiciese presencia, pero la niebla sí estaba y parecía que una luz blanquecina y densa flotaba entre los patios y jardines, y sobre todo el pueblo en sí. Serían cerca de las 5:00 a. m. cuando me encontraba mirando toda esta atmósfera que tiene cierta magia, y mientras sorbía mi café caliente, me hice a mí mismo la propuesta de salir a las calles a caminar y hacer fotos, olvidándome un poco y haciendo caso omiso de algunas diligencias las cuales tenía que hacer temprano...

So, as soon as the day began to light up (even despite the dense fog), I left a brief note stuck to the refrigerator for my wife, in which I told her that I had gone out to walk and take photos. And it was the same nearby streets that spoke to me once more of how much I like doing this. And, curious thing, there was not even a bit of cold, but the air temperature was perhaps warm, and some people commented so as I passed by. It seems that these days even the fog has to suffer the effects of the heat. But, except for that condition, the town was just as magical as it always is when there is fog. So I continued walking, observing, and releasing the shutter of my camera...

Así que, apenas comenzó a clarear el día (aun a pesar de la densa niebla), dejé una breve nota pegada al refrigerador para mi esposa, en la cual le dije que había salido a caminar y a hacer fotos. Y fueron las mismas calles cercanas las que me hablaron una vez más de cuánto me gusta hacer esto. Y, cosa curiosa, no había siquiera un poco de frío, sino que la temperatura del aire era quizás tibia, y algunas personas así lo comentaban mientras yo pasaba de largo. Parece que por estos días incluso la niebla tiene que sufrir los efectos del calor. Pero, salvo por esa condición, el pueblo era igual de mágico que siempre lo es cuando hay niebla. Así que continué caminando, observando y disparando el obturador de mi cámara...

The fog was very useful to me today, because when mornings are like this, here in the town's streets people speak in a louder voice and the sound travels through the silence of the partially empty streets. Then one can perceive the frustrated and tired voices (the most) and some hopeful ones with incipient optimism (the fewest). And one learns over time to walk on tiptoe and know what to say to each and every one. And it is just that hard times exacerbate people's moods and they themselves seek solidarity with what they express and can feel hurt by things as banal as a joke or a joy expressed right in front of their sadness. This is also part of the experience of doing street photography in places like this town where I have always lived...

Me sirvió de mucho hoy la niebla, porque cuando las mañanas son así, aquí en las calles del pueblo las personas hablan en voz más alta y el sonido viaja entre el silencio de las calles parcialmente vacías. Entonces uno puede percibir las voces frustradas y cansadas (las más) y algunas esperanzadas y con incipiente optimismo (las menos). Y uno aprende con el tiempo a andar de puntillas y saber qué decir a cada quien y a cada cual. Y es que los tiempos duros exacerban los ánimos en las personas y ellas mismas buscan solidaridad con lo que expresan y pueden sentirse heridas con cosas tan banales como una broma o una alegría expresada justo enfrente de sus tristezas. Esto también es parte de la experiencia de hacer fotografía callejera en lugares como este pueblo en donde he vivido siempre...
