"Absolutely unpredictable" are two words that perfectly describe my personality. So yesterday, a little after 4:00 PM, as I was getting ready to take a shower, I suddenly slipped on my old hiking boots, grabbed my camera, and announced, "I'll be back in a couple of hours, maybe longer." Neither my wife nor my daughter seemed surprised; they just shrugged, and my wife said, "Take care." And that's how I ended up back on the town streets, heading west, with practically no destination in mind.

"Absolutamente impredecible" son dos palabras que definen mi manera de ser de manera muy precisa. Así que ayer, cuando siendo un poco más de las de las 4:00 PM y aprestándome a tomar una ducha, repentinamente me calcé mis viejas botas de excursionismo, tomé mi cámara y dije en voz alta "vuelvo en un par de horas o quizás más"; ni mi esposa ni mi hija se sorprendieron, y apenas se encogieron de hombros y mi esposa me dijo "cuídate" Y así fue como terminé de nuevo en las calles del pueblo, poniendo rumbo hacia el oeste, y prácticamente sin rumbo fijo...

I hate planning things; since I stopped practicing my profession about 12 years ago, it seemed to me that "I'd had enough planning in my life," so now I love doing things simply because they pop into my head at a given moment. So, without thinking about the time or the distance, I ended up leaving the paved streets of the town behind and taking the narrow path that climbs towards the hills of "El Calvario" and from there to an area called "Los Cachicamos" (that's, by the way, the local slang name for armadillos). The climb is steep, but I felt very energetic (that's another common trait of mine; I can go from depression and laziness to frenzy and mobility in a matter of minutes), so I covered the, I estimate, four kilometers to "Los Cachicamos" in just under 60 minutes, and around 5:00 AM I was already admiring the scenery and taking photographs...

Odio planificar las cosas; desde que dejé de ejercer mi profesión hace unos 12 años atrás, me pareció que "ya había tenido suficiente planificación en mi vida", así que ahora amo hacer cosas simplemente porque me pasaron por la cabeza en un momento dado no más. Así que, sin pensar en la hora y sin pensar en la distancia; terminé dejando atrás las calles pavimentadas del pueblo y tomé el angosto sendero que asciende hacia las colinas de "El Calvario" y de allí hacia un área la cual es llamada aquí "Los Cachicamos" (ese es por cierto, el nombre vulgar que se le da aquí a los armadillos). El ascenso es abrupto, pero me sentía con mucha energía (esa es otra cosa común en mi; puedo pasar de la depresión y flojera, al frenesí y la movilidad en cuestión de minutos), así que recorrí los, estimo, cuatro kilómetros del trayecto hasta "Los Cachicamos" en poco menos de 60 minutos y a eso de las 5:00 AM ya me encontraba admirando el paisajes y haciendo fotografías...

As I mentioned before, the climb is steep, and despite the relatively short distance to the village, you quickly gain altitude and begin to see the streets and the landscape below, with agricultural areas to the east and north. Thanks to this, I was able to take photos practically at every turn, with very little stopping. And it wasn't just the scenery; the roadside was full of other interesting things to photograph. Also, since it was late afternoon, the light contributed to creating enchanting views all around.

Tal como dije previamente, el ascenso es abrupto, y a pesar de la relativamente corta distancia al pueblo, rápidamente se empieza a ganar altitud y comienzan a verse abajo las calles y el paisaje con áreas agrícolas al este y al norte del pueblo. Gracias a esto puede hacer fotografías prácticamente a cada paso y deteniéndome muy poco. Y no solo se trata de paisajes, pues las orillas del camino están repletas de otras cosas interesantes para fotografiar. También, por ser ya el final de las horas de la tarde, la luz contribuía a crear visiones encantadoras de todo alrededor.

I reached a certain point and rested for a while. Then I noticed that the sun was beginning to approach the peaks of the mountains to the west, about to disappear behind them. So I decided to start the return journey calmly, confident that I would reach the edge of the village while there was still enough daylight...

Llegué hasta un punto determinado y descansé un poco. Entonces me percaté de que ya el disco solar comenzaba a acercarse a las cumbres de las montañas que se alzan al oeste, para ocultarse detrás. Así que ahí decidí emprender el regreso calmadamente y con la certeza de que llegaría al borde del pueblo aún con suficiente luz...

I took many more photos, so these are simply the ones I liked best for this first post about this impromptu hike to these hills. I hope to share the rest soon...
