Preparing for a Holiday Art Market

So why am I talking about a holiday fair in the middle of Summer?

Last year my cousin invited me to sell my crochet items at her daughter’s school. Every year they hold a holiday art market where you can sell handmade items during the holiday season.

Well it didn’t work out for me last year. She invited me in September but the market was being held in November. Since I don’t always have items on hand to sell I would have needed WAY more time to prepare.

So I declined and told her I’d be ready this year.

That is why I am preparing for it mid Summer. I plan to build up a nice supply of items and I will be sharing my ideas on what those will be with you today.

It would also be nice hearing your opinions if you have experienced selling at one of these fairs. I’d love to know what worked for you and open up room for any suggestions.

My Plan

Of course my mind went crazy into all sorts of directions when I first started contemplating what to do.

I decided instead of making so many different items to just stick with three categories. I get less stressed when I have a central focus. I figured I can make multiples of the same few items and make them to the best of my ability.

I will be making two different items in each category.

Category 1: Accessories

IMG_8201.jpeg
lacey crochet scrunchies

I plan on making tons of scrunchies in different colors.

Scrunchies are one of those hair accessories that has been around for years but will never get old. Women love to have these on hand and I see many of them wearing these around their wrists to keep near.

I don’t doubt that handmade ones will do well at this market. They are great for a self gift or to gift to loved ones. They would make great stocking stuffers too.

I will also make hat and scarf sets. Since the sets will take longer to make I will probably only make up to three.

I did read how shoppers look for matching sets so it’s best to provide them instead of just making a variety of separates. Sets make for great gifts too!

Category 2: Kitchen Aids

IMG_8205.jpeg
crochet towel topper

I’ve always wanted to make towel toppers for my kitchen. I think they are cute and helpful all in the same.

I always have a towel hanging from my oven and it constantly falls off which gets very annoying. My first one will be for practice and it will stay in my kitchen 😁.

I’ve seen many different types but I like this original idea made in a modern sophisticated way.

The other kitchen aid I will be making are crocheted scrubbies. I like the idea of having a scrubby you can wash and reuse that doesn’t come with any chemicals on it. I am one that loves a traditional scrubby (the two-sided yellow and green one) but I know things are added to it that might not be health friendly.

There are scrubby yarns out there for projects like this. I want to find a bright green, blue and yellow color so that these scrubbies can be vibrant and look amazing on the kitchen sink. I may even do a bright pink one for practice 😛.

I can see shoppers buying a couple for themselves as well as for gifts.

Category 3: Seasonal Decor

Who doesn’t love decor?

Many people look forward to the season change in order to put out new decoration pieces for their home. Whether it’s hanging, sitting on the counter or laying across a table, handmade decorations are always a must! 😃

I’ve shared these snowman friends with you before. I made them to decorate the tables for our homeschool co-op. I still have them here in my possession (stored nice and neatly) and I plan on selling them at the market place.

I will be making more of them with different colored hat and scarf sets.

I haven’t decided what the second decor item will be. I wanted to make those pumpkins with the cinnamon sticks again but the fair is in November. Pumpkin decor is usually being put away that month and winter decor is coming into play.

Do you have any ideas of what else I could make for my other decor item?

Please let me know in the comments. 😉

I think the ideas I have all make for good gifts and self gift items. I know when I shop at places like these I tend to always grab myself a gift as well.

I plan to start shopping for yarn soon and working in the order I listed the categories. I feel the demand for items is in the proper order.

Stay tuned these next few months as I share my progress with you. My mother and sister will also be setting up tables to sell their handmade items too. My mother will be selling her quilted and felt blankets along with other items and my sister will be selling her wreaths and quilling work.

I am really looking forward to this! 😆

As a crafter, what would you make for a holiday market?

As a shopper, what would you be looking to buy at a holiday craft market?

Your feedback and help is greatly appreciated ~ 🤗

What an excellent way to organize this project, and although at the beginning you mention that your head started spinning, I think you have it all pretty clear.
Personally I liked everything, but especially the decorative part, it's my favorite, it would be nice to include Christmas designs, and although it's almost half the year before that season, the fair will be in the last quarter, so people will be encouraged to buy their ornaments for the Christmas season.
Greetings and best wishes for the fair.

Thank you @artsugar 😃! I don't feel stressed in my thoughts now that I've narrowed things down.

I love your suggestion. People will definitely be shopping for Christmas decor and ornaments. Thank you ~

Yes, it's best to focus on simple things than a whole lot, so you can get the task done in time before the holiday fair. I've never been to one before as it isn't common in my country.

I love your ideas, I don't know much about crocheting, and how long it takes to get various of this items done, would have added scarf 🧣 and table mat, this idea is based on my region though. My favourite of them all is the seasonal decor.

Ah yes! My mother loves sewing table mats. I've never crocheted one before but I know they make for great holiday decor too. Thanks for adding that idea. 😉

It seems like the decor is the best liked idea. Yay!

I'm totally learning crocheting from tomorrow if only to share in these awesome experiences. Like you Said, it's approaching winter so these decorative works would go well. I should think a little Christmas tree but I don't know how possible or easy that would be to make.

Nevertheless, I love all these works, particularly the scrunchies and I'm looking forward to all the amazing work you're yet to do.🤗🌺

I appreciate your response. I know many will be looking for things to help decorate and get ready for Christmas during that time.

I’m glad you like the scrunchie idea 😃. I’ve been wanting to make my own for the longest so now I have a reason ~ 😄

Sounds exciting the idea that there will be a Christmas market, I hope you do well with your table and that you can sell everything haha. I can't think of any ideas to help you, but you are doing well, people are going to like it. Good luck :)

Thank you! Oh my gosh it would be so incredible if I were to sell everything 😆. Even if I sold half my items I'd be pleased 😅.

Thanks so much for the encouragement ~

This is just amazing. Reminds me of the first set of scrunchies I tried making, hehe. They came looking like hand gloves as I hadn't mastered the pattern of working over a rubberband😂😂. I still have them around.

I totally love the fact that you're starting early, this way, you get to make all your items with lots of love and less pressure. Since it is going to be winter, I would suggest making snowflakes(i don't know if they are too basic). Snowflakes could be used as a decor and some people may go ahead to use them on their Christmas trees.

I love all the items you have already come up with. The snowman friends are adorable and the towel topper is definitely something I would love to buy. I look forward to admiring your other projects😊❣

Oh my gosh I would love to see those scrunchies 😄. It's always nice keeping a sample of our first go around to remind us of our progress. ☺️

Thank you. My mother, sister and I all made a pact to start earlier this year but you know how…life happens 😏. I still think I’ll be able to get quite a bit done to fill up a table if I start now.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad to know you like the ideas I already have.

I think it's great that you are preparing in advance. All of the options sound like excellent ideas to me. I haven't had the opportunity to participate in these types of fairs, but I would love to. I wish you much success in all your projects. Best regards.

Thanks Katty! I wish I would have started a bit earlier but I think for my first time I will have enough to sell to get a feel for what I'm in for 😄. If it goes well I will definitely be planning to do this annually.

I know if you had an opportunity you would love the experience and do well. Thanks so much for your encouraging words ~ 🥰

Wonderful! would mittens be a good idea to add in your scarf-hat sets?
I wish I could sell my handicrafts too, someday. there wer no art fairs here in my place and the city is far

Ya got me. I have secretly been afraid to try making mittens. I always have a fear one will turn out bigger than the other and I would have to redo them 😂. But yes, I think these would be awesome to go with the sets. Now I just may have to try them and get over my fear lol. Awesome suggestion, thank you!!!

I hope you get an opportunity to sell them sometime soon. Maybe not even at a fair but just around your neighborhood or to coworkers. 😉

thanks! I know you will make it perfectly and you don't have to redo it and it would be awesome!

thanks, they did a few years back , but they think it's overpriced. but no rush, I'll get there on the perfect time. One day that will be my focus and I will be my own boss.

I really appreciate you having faith in me to do good ☺️🤗.

Oh wow...if they only realized the time and effort it takes to make handmade products I think their opinion would change. You're right, when the time is right you'll be able to do as you desire. We’ll be here to hear all about it ~ 😉

Hello.
I have never participated in a Christmas fair, it is not very common to do them for my sector. Most of them are held in very specific places and the cost to participate is high.

The three categories you chose for your creations seem very attractive to me. As a creator I would make a lot of hair tails and as a buyer I would look for everything related to Christmas design for my kitchen.

I am sure you will do very well. Anyway, let me wish you the best of luck.

Oh yes. I’ve wanted to do something like this before for city fairs but the cost was out of my reach. I’m thankful that this school market is more affordable and in my range 😅.

Oh awesome! I’m glad you said you would make a lot of the hair pieces because I really believe this will be one of the most wanted items. I also look forward to making the kitchen items too. 😊

Thanks so much dear friend ~ 💓

Honestly, I have never been to such fairs. and probably in different parts of the world people buy different things. this is a difficult task for me. but when it comes to winter decor, I immediately thought of snowflakes. I saw snowflakes made of white yarn crocheted. I came up with the idea to combine such a snowflake with a kitchen towel and hang it over the edge of the snowflake. The hair band idea is really cool. I also saw such an accessory as mitts. it is very elegant and generally looks cool if you use lace and beads for crochet 😀

Very true Tali. Preferences and wants do differ when speaking of cultures and regions.

That’s a cute idea with the snowflake and towel. A snowflake definitely brings in the mood for winter.

This is the second suggestion for mitts. Hmmmm, I think I need to add this to my hat and scarf sets.

Thanks a bunch for your ideas and sharing the video ~ 😊

I totally agree. I wasn’t so into them when I was younger but now that I can crochet them I think I like them better now 😄.

I’m looking forward to trying these. Thanks for the visit ~ 😊

It really feels less of a burden when we have a proper organization of things and you have made a good one for your work.
I was expecting to see a list of play items for young girls since it is a school exhibition maybe the children might be interested in buying things as well.. But the snow man friend is a beautiful one for that purpose too.

Thanks Monica. Yes, I feel more excited and less stressed now that I have planned a little ☺️.

That’s a good idea too. I was more thinking along the lines of things to wear and I know both girls and women are really back into scrunchies again. I was also only catering to the adults that would be shopping lol. I hadn’t thought of anything for play. I’ll have to try to make time to add something geared specifically toward the students. Thanks for your awesome input! 😘

How exciting it would be to participate in a fair like this, I do not lose hope, I congratulate you friend for your beautiful projects for this year, your great innovative and well thought out ideas, everything you show us as first options have left me delighted. I imagine the felt tablecloths made by your mother, everything will be a charm and a wonderful success.😘🤗
