Savitri Vrata - the importance of marital devotion

She is the embodiment of marital fidelity and the well-being of husband and family.

Today is Savitri Vrata, a very special festival celebrated by married Hindu women, worshiping Goddess Savitri, seeking her blessings for long life and the well-being of their husband and family. As per our legend, Goddess Savitri showed her devotion to the Hindu god of death and justice who was taking her husband's soul (after death) and he was obligated to return his husband's life because of her devotion towards the duty as a wife. It gives a very strong message to the society - the women have a very powerful role in the spiritual growth and well-being of the family, being an exemplary of love, devotion, and commitment.

Our temple was crowded in the morning, with all the married ladies coming to perform the rituals in their traditional attire, wearing new saree, bangles, and vermilion. The space not accommodating everyone, she had to wait for her turn, the priest doing the worship in batches. That is when, I joined her to capture some special moments of this day - a very very special day to count on her.

The day-long fast and worship is a testament to her strong devotion and love for me and I made sure to play my very little part, bringing everything she needed. Last week, we went to a nearby showroom and bought sarees for this occasion, including two sarees for Mom. Mom's brother ( my uncle) sent 1200/- to my account for this occasion - as per the tradition, the girl's paternal house ensures to send saree, bangles, vermilion and all other items needed for this ritual every year, till they are alive. My uncle is 78 and you can imagine the value of commitment their generation still has. Because of knee problems his movements are restricted, but not his thoughts.

The ladies break their fasting by only eating fruits that are offered as part of the worship, and we buy them in limited quantities as the price of fruits soars to new highs at this time - Mangoes at home helping a lot in serving the purpose.

Before coming back she asked me capture few more moments with some other ladies of the society - they appeared only because their turn was yet to come - photography even took a back seat, which every woman love otherwise.

Even though she is on fasting, she served us a very delicious lunch - the true value of woman empowerment, spreading love and happiness at home. It's very important for us to realize the value of a woman's spiritual and familial endeavors - they are empowered by God to be givers most of the time. All they seek is a little love and happiness which comes back to us compounded.

She asked me to do a photo shoot this afternoon, in another saree, but unfortunately the weather has spoiled the plan - more to come on that later. And yesterday we went for a nice family time - including the movie "Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning" - more to come on that as well.

Women are one step forward even if we will never admit it!

Are those celebrations days off work?

Have a good week!

No day off, working ladies had to run after completing the rituals.

This was such a beautiful and enlightening read. The celebration looks so graceful and meaningful and the women in the pictures look absolutely stunning! 😍 Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an unattractive Indian woman 🤭 There's just something so elegant about the way they carry tradition.

Quick question, is Savitri Vrata usually celebrated in groups or more privately within families? Thanks for sharing this!

It's usually celebrated more privately within families, the reason being, the woman not having enough time to go to temple and wait and perform all the rituals. They still do all the work that day even, so if the temple is far away, then its difficult.

Truly, without the collaboration of women at home and helping their husbands, living together would be practically impossible. So, congratulations to all the wives who do everything possible to ensure that their partners and children have the best possible time, all together as one big family.
