A Tale of Coastal Resilience and Media Panic

Ever since the catastrophic 1999 Super Cyclone (the historic Paradeep Super Cyclone), we in Odisha have become all too well-acquainted with these massive weather systems. Given that we live in a coastal state, cyclones are an incredibly frequent part of our lives. Staying a bit further inland means the direct physical impact is slightly cushioned, but we certainly still feel the heavy brunt of the wind, the endless downpours, and the disruption.

Over the decades, our state has truly mastered the art of disaster management. It is a matter of immense pride that the Disaster Management Authority of my state (OSDMA) has been honored with prestigious national and international awards for its global benchmarks in saving lives and executing flawless evacuation blueprints.

Yet, despite our structural readiness, this week brought a very modern kind of storm: a storm of pure media panic. Look at the fascinating irony of "Cyclone Arnab." If you scroll through viral reels and short videos, you’d think a massive, raging monster named Arnab was barrelling straight for us. But if you look at the hard scientific facts from the IMD, "Cyclone Arnab" doesn't even exist! The system that just made landfall near Kalingapatnam on Wednesday night was officially classified as a Deep Depression - meaning it never actually reached the wind speeds necessary to earn an official cyclone name. "Arnab" (which means 'ocean' in Bengali) is simply the next unused name sitting on a predetermined regional master list contributed by Bangladesh, waiting for a future storm that actually qualifies.

But try telling that to the internet or the local markets! This media frenzy provoked a very specific neighborhood ritual—everyone immediately rushed out to stock up on potatoes and onions first😀. This frantic buying inevitably created a sudden, temporary shortage, causing prices to fluctuate and shoot through the roof over a matter of hours.

Meanwhile, our meteorology department handled things professionally by issuing timely red alerts for vulnerable southern regions, keeping everyone grounded with regular, accurate updates. The disaster management teams proactively relocated thousands of people to safe shelters ahead of time. While you always hear a few sceptical voices grumbling that such massive shifting is unnecessary for a deep depression, I firmly believe it is the wisest path. Precaution saves lives, plain and simple.

You can never truly predict the final, exact impact of a storm system because no amount of science or technology can be 100% accurate when it comes to the chaos of nature. You simply cannot play games with the elements.

Hopefully, the weather clears up completely very soon so I can finally get back outside and restart my pending gardening activities. But even with the rain pouring down, I took this opportunity to pot some more fresh stems that will hopefully grow into resilient plants, more to come on that....
