The Sheep barn at the Fair.

All of these sheep pictures were taken at the Boone County Fair in Illinois and I have to say I know very little about sheep. Back in the day when we were farming our focus was on beef cattle and I had chickens, rabbits and a few pigs, but never sheep. Any information in this post comes from online research I did after the photos were taken, not from personal knowledge.

This is a Shropshire sheep, identifiable by its dark black face and ears and "wool hat" or cap covering the top of its head (poll).

Sheep must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). State requirements enforce checks and animals must have official federal Scrapie identification tags or tattoos.

This is the exhibitor display inside the livestock barn.
The banner overhead identifies the farm as Pasture Vewe Acres specifying that they raise Southdowns and Corriedales. The sheep leaning over the pen rail is a Corriedale.

"Do Not Touch - Thank you!" sign is posted on the front gate to protect the animals' washed and prepped fleece before showtime, as well as to help maintain biosecurity in the barn.

This cutie is a Valais Blacknose sheep.
Hailing from the Valais region of Switzerland, these sheep are popular at. county fairs. Because purebred lines were introduced fairly recently in the US through import and artificial insemination breed-up programs, seeing one in the livestock barns is a major draw for visitors.
Many breeds are shy or skittish, but Valais Blacknose sheep are famous for being exceptionally friendly, calm, and approachable around farm guests.

These slick-shorn, polled (hornless) sheep with clean white faces and ears are typical of meat breeds like Dorset or Southdown. The tight, slick-shorn style highlights their muscle structure for judging while making it easier to keep them cool and clean on fresh straw bedding during hot fair days.

: All market lambs must be slick shorn (ready for the show ring) prior to weigh-in. This allows judges and official inspectors to spot skin conditions.

Protective coverings keep the sheep clean: It shields freshly shorn and washed wool from straw, bedding, dust, and manure while resting in the barn pen. and helps protect from biting insects.

Very cute pictures 🙂 I have fond memories of visiting the ag barns at the Minnesota State Fair when we lived in Minneapolis.

I need to get me one of those 😅 bugs are bad right now after the rain we have been getting. I love that the sheep in the last photo has a customized cover up 🙂 Reserve Champion Ram ... I can't read it all.

"Reserve Champion Ram - National Hampshire Junior Show - 2003 NAILE". NAILE refers to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky—one of the premier, most prestigious national livestock shows in North America. I would think this is a progeny from that bloodline.

Those sheep are definitely something different from the usual farm animals! 😊 It must have been interesting seeing them at the fair, especially since your farming experience was mostly with cattle and other animals. The fair sounds like a fun place to learn something new! 🐑🌾

That sheep with the hoodie reminds me of that cooling thing headscarf I wore recently 😂

What's the difference between a sheep and a goat? Genuinely wondering.

I know they look a little different but must be related?

Found this.

sheep and goats are close relatives from the same sub-family (Caprinae), they are distinct species with clear differences in physical traits, genetics, and behavior.

Thanks for the information. It's one of those questions that I think many people have.

Those sheep are very cute, especially the one in the fourth picture; its wool is absolutely adorable. We don't have sheep like that where I live; here, there are only sheep raised for meat.

I loved that wooly little sheep, too! Most sheep around here are raised for meat, too

I had rams and sheep with horns. When, in my youth, my future wife saw them for the first time, she was scared. She said, “I’ve only ever seen sheep without horns.” And she said the same thing about goats. She grew up in Kostroma, and there they always had the Ivanovo breed of sheep. I could talk a lot about these animals. I wanted to raise them at home. But...

I would have loved to have a flock of sheep, but then I got busy raising children instead.

These sheep look so cute. The Valais Blacknose reminds of my brother's Pomeranian puppies. It is like the Poms in the sheep world. 🥰 I hope the coverings are comfortable.

The puppies must be adorable! Since the coverings keep the flies away the sheep probably appreciate the protection!
