SeaPhotography Week 200: Singing Sands

avatar
(Edited)

In this week’s contest, #Seaphotography gives everyone the freedom to publish the photo of their choice on the single theme of the SEA.

My theme is Fun By The Sea

Folks, young and old enjoy the waters at Basin Head , Prince Edward Island. This is a beautiful summer’s day to walk in the soft squeaky sand on the beach.

Basin Head with it’s Singing Sands Beach is located in King’s County, PEI. It is a Provincial Park bordering on the Northumberland Strait, about 13 Km from the town of Souris.

A friend and I spend Saturday afternoon at Basin Head. We rubbed our feet in the sand to hear the squeaky singing sound that gave it the name, Singing Sands. The sand seems to sing due to it’s high silica content. It is unique to the province.

Here someone walked right out of their socks and left them on the boardwalk after getting them soaked with a combination of singing sand and sea water.

This lifeguard chair was empty. There were two more chairs on the site with lifeguards on duty.

Although highly discouraged, I saw a couple adventurous teenagers diving from the bridge into the channel below. Luckily no harm was done as they came up laughing, thrilled to have done something naughty.

Looking down from the bluff…

In the distance is the ferry that goes from Souris to the Magdalen Islands.

Dogs are welcome as long as the owners keep them on a lease.

Besides visiting the Singing Sands at Basin Head my friend and played tourists and went on to visit the East Point Lighthouse but that excursion is for another post.

Yup! Me too! I must try to find some time and opportunity to go swimming in the sea in winter.

I love the fact Jo that beaches around the world are so different from one another. Beach nows here are an everyday thing due to the warm subtropic weather, we are so spoilt!
Rubbing my feet in squeezing sand sounds like a lot of fun - there is such a lot of different natural phenomena in places.
Seeing wet socks drying is hilarious. We usually see thongs left beside sand dunes so beach walkers can go barefooted.
I never tire of seeing the wonders elsewhere, always entertaining.
Thank you for your little post, I enjoyed it 💜

Most welcome Angie. Seeing the drying socks made me chuckle too. 😆 You are lucky to have beach weather everyday. 💜

This reminds me so much on the time when our kids were much younger and we spent our holidays on the sandy beaches in Italy. It was cool and building sand castles with them was fun, but later we decided to leave the sand for the more rocky beaches in Croatia 😊

Yes wet sand all over your feet can be a nuisance when you are ready to leave, Hannes. The day wasn’t too hot but just right with a warm breeze.

We are having a few days of rain. I think we are at the end of the real hot weather.

Thanks for everything, dear Hannes. Wishing you a great Thor’s Day. 🔨 🤗

Hi Jo,
our temperatures still hot around 30C, but almost every day we get some raindrops too. Right now it's raining 🌧️
Have an awesome Thor's Day, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Never heard of singing sands, something different, in a lovely setting to enjoy a day relaxing Jo.

It’s a great spot to spend the day., Joan. They have a ice cream and gift shop there. Also Basin Head Fisheries Museum with displays and exhibits that will take you back in time. 😊

Dipping toes into sand licking an ice cream sure would take one back to pleasant memories. Sounds like an interesting place to visit with history.

Interesting phenomenon this Singing Sand. First time I heard of this. Must be quite an experience. Your photos reminded me that our beaches have now opened to the public. It won't be long now, I will be tasting the salt water and feeling the white sand on my feet. No singing sand, though. 😊
