[ENG-SPN] Valderredible: The Mystical Frontier of the Way / Valderredible: La Frontera Mística del Camino

Valderredible is considered the largest area or region in Cantabria, although it shares part of its territory with those two Castilian "fireflies," which, metaphorically and comparatively speaking, are the communities of Burgos and Palencia. The latter includes the Gothic Fields, which so deeply affect pilgrims on their way to the tomb of the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela and which still preserve traces of Visigothic architecture, such as the striking church of San Juan de Baños.

Valderredible, like the Bierzo region of León, also suffered, especially after the upheaval of the 7th century that marked the decline of the Visigothic dynasties and the penetration of the Muslim armies, who, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, became particularly strong in Andalusia. This mass exodus fueled the eremitic phenomenon to unimaginable levels.

Therefore, there are many caves repurposed as rock-cut churches, many of which served millennia before as spiritual refuges for earlier civilizations whose traces were deliberately erased. These caves abound in this region forgotten by time, perhaps the most striking of all. Its Romanesque bell gable, attached to the church, not only guards a medieval cemetery featuring anthropomorphic tombs carved into the rock, but also serves as a beacon in the distance, signaling to travelers and pilgrims that a part of a world, though forgotten and primitive, is not truly lost.

Se considera a Valderredible, la zona o región más extensa de Cantabria, aunque comparta parte de su territorio con esas dos luciérnagas castellanas, que, metafórica y comparativamente hablando, son las comunidades de Burgos y de Palencia, incluidos, en ésta última, esos Campos Góticos que tanto afectan al peregrino en su camino hacia la tumba del Apóstol en Santiago de Compostela y que todavía conservan rastros de la arquitectura visigoda, como la vistosa iglesia de San Juan de Baños.

Valderredible, como el Bierzo leonés, también sufrió, sobre todo a partir de aquel descalabro del siglo VII que supuso el ocaso de las dinastías visigodas y la penetración de los ejércitos musulmanes, que, atravesando el Estrecho se hicieron especialmente fuertes en Andalucía, un éxodo masivo que avivó el fenómeno eremítico hasta cotas inimaginables.

No son pocas, por lo tanto, las cuevas reacondicionadas como iglesias rupestres, muchas de las cuales habían servido, milenios antes, de refugio espiritual a unas civilizaciones predecesoras, cuyas huellas fueron deliberadamente borradas, las que abundan en esta región olvidada por el tiempo, destacando, posiblemente del resto, la iglesia rupestre de Santa María de Valverde, cuya espadaña, románica y anexa, además de custodiar un cementerio medieval donde destacan las tumbas antropomorfas excavadas en la piedra, es también un verdadero faro en la distancia, que señala, a viajeros y a peregrinos, que allí se localiza parte de un mundo, que, no por olvidado y primitivo, se encuentra realmente perdido.
