[ENG-SPN] Valdediós: The Valley of Mysteries / Valdediós: El Valle de los Misterios

It would certainly have been strange if this unique enclave, located in the heart of old Maliayo, now Villaviciosa, had gone unnoticed by the keen senses of those spiritual seekers who settled, under the motto of ‘ora et labora’, that is, ‘pray and work’, at key points along the various routes to Santiago: the Cistercians.

We are in this Happy Valley, or Valley of God, Valdediós, visiting one of the monasteries which, aside from being characterized by the austere beauty of Cistercian architecture, awakens the traveler's insatiable curiosity with its countless unsolved enigmas: the Monastery of Santa María.

Altarpieces, whose content even time has not entirely silenced, depict, for example, twelve virgin saints as twelve apostles, not far from where Saint James himself, astride a traditional white horse, leads the medieval spiritual chivalry. These are interwoven with Solomonic keystones and supposed tombs of Knights Templar, creating a fascinating historical and symbolic puzzle that is extremely difficult not to be captivated by.
