[ENG-SPN] Two legendary milestones: Bécquer and Toledo / Dos hitos legendarios: Bécquer y Toledo

It would have been incredible if a city like Toledo had not also influenced that legendary prose, full of beauty and supernatural drama that characterizes, along with that poetry, of which a certain critic less merciless than the others, once said that it seemed like 'an accordion played by an angel', its unforgettable legends: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

In that capital of forgotten empires -according to Remarque- where a cave similar to the one that hid the fabulous treasure of Ali Baba still bears the name of Hercules, where at night the wind carries with it the laments of enchanted maidens, the misereres of the deceased Templars of Saint Servando and where each dark alley hides a disturbing secret, it would have been impossible for Bécquer, resisting temptation, to pass by while illness banished him to the cold cells of the monastery of Veruela, far away, on the banks of the Moncayo.

So, fortunately, by not doing so, he left us two examples of that outstanding supernatural narrative, which, under the title of ‘The Golden Anklet’ and ‘The Kiss’, are supported by a land rich in surprising with generous forgotten Visigoth treasures, with a cathedral that houses a very miraculous Patron Saint, the Virgin of the Tabernacle and a monastery, that of Saint John of the Kings, on the banks of whose walls that poetic divine justice also developed, punishing the audacity and daring of the officers of Napoleon’s invading army.

Hubiera sido ciertamente increíble que una ciudad como Toledo no hubiera influido, también, en esa prosa legendaria, repleta de belleza y de dramatismo sobrenatural que caracteriza, junto con esa poesía, de la que cierto crítico menos despiadado que los demás, afirmó una vez que parecía ‘un acordeón tocado por un ángel’, a sus inolvidables leyendas: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

En esa capital de imperios olvidados -según Remarque- donde una cueva similar a la que ocultaba el fabuloso tesoro de Alí Babá, lleva todavía el nombre de Hércules, donde por las noches el viento arrastra consigo los lamentos de las doncellas encantadas, los misereres de los difuntos templarios de San Servando y donde cada oscura callejuela esconde un secreto perturbador, imposible hubiera sido que Bécquer, resistiéndose a la tentación, pasara de largo mientras la enfermedad le desterraba a las frías celdas del monasterio de Veruela, allá lejos, a la vera del Moncayo.

De manera, que, afortunadamente, al no hacerlo, nos dejó dos ejemplos de esa sobresaliente narrativa sobrenatural, que, bajo el título de ‘La ajorca de oro’ y ‘El beso’, tienen el soporte de una tierra pródiga en sorprender con generoso tesoros visigodos olvidados, con una catedral que alberga a una Patrona muy milagrosa, la Virgen del Sagrario y de un monasterio, el de San Juan de los Reyes, a la vera de cuyos muros se desarrolló también esa poética justicia divina, castigando la osadía y el atrevimiento de la oficialidad del ejército invasor de Napoleón.
