[ENG-SPN] The Valley That Sleeps Beneath the Water / El valle que duerme bajo el agua

Lovers of mystery and adventure also have, a few kilometers further on from that strategic spot where the ancient gods of Pompey and Caesar's Rome watch over the eternal slumber of the ruins of Julióbriga, the incentive of being able to visit some of those villages that were submerged by that other metaphorical Great Flood, which, for the Cantabrian region of Campoo in particular, meant the construction of the Ebro Reservoir.

This occurred during the post-war period, shortly after the discord in the West spread throughout the world, taking millions of souls with it, when large areas of this unique region of Cantabria, bordering the Meseta Central plateau, were affected. Many towns, some medieval and others more or less prosperous thanks to industrialization, as well as extensive areas of farmland and livestock, were affected and irrevocably submerged, giving rise to numerous contemporary legends. These, combined with ancestral traditions, form a picturesque and folkloric ensemble that is difficult to separate.

Such is the case of Villanueva de las Rozas and the so-called "Cathedral of the Sea": the Baroque tower of the parish church of the old town, submerged by the waters, seems to rise above the surface when the heat of summer intensifies and the water level drops. This still allows the oldest inhabitants of the area to remember what the town where they were born was like, regardless of the legends about tormented souls, the sounds of mysterious underwater bells, equally mysterious lights, and mists that, it is said, allow one to glimpse, on rare occasions, the place as it was before the waters concealed it forever. In short: a spectacular journey where landscape, history, and tradition combine to make adventure a vivid illusion.

Los amantes del misterio y de la aventura, también tienen, algunos kilómetros más delante de ese lugar estratégico donde los viejos dioses de la Roma de Pompeyo y César vigilan el sueño eterno de las ruinas de Julióbriga, el aliciente de poder visitar alguno de esos pueblos que fueron anegados por ese otro metafórico Diluvio Universal, que, para la zona cántabra de Campoo, en particular, significó la construcción del Embalse del Ebro.

Ocurrió durante la posguerra, poco después de que las desavenencias de Occidente se extendieran por el mundo, llevándose consigo millones de almas, cuando grandes extensiones de esta zona tan particular de Cantabria, colindante con la Meseta, se vieron afectadas. Muchos pueblos, algunos medievales y otros, más o menos prósperos con la industrialización, así como extensas zonas de cultivo y ganadería, se vieron afectados e irremediablemente sumergidos, dando lugar a numerosas leyendas contemporáneas, que, sumadas a las tradiciones ancestrales, forman hoy en día un conjunto folklórico y pintoresco difícil de separar.

Sería el caso de Villanueva de las Rozas y la denominada ‘Catedral del Mar’: la torre barroca de la iglesia parroquial del viejo pueblo sumergido por las aguas, que parece remontarse sobre la superficie de unas aguas, cuando la canícula aprieta y su nivel desciende, todavía permiten que los habitantes más viejos de la zona, recuerden cómo era el pueblo en el que nacieron, independientemente de las leyendas sobre ánimas en pena, sonidos de misteriosas campanas bajo el agua, luces no menos misteriosas y nieblas, que, según se cuenta, permiten contemplar, en ocasiones excepciones, el lugar tal y como era antes de que las aguas lo ocultaran para siempre. En definitiva: un espectacular recorrido donde paisaje, memoria y tradición inducen a hacer de la aventura una vívida ilusión.
