[ENG-SPN] The Royal Palace of Olite / El Palacio Real de Olite

We return to Navarre, that admirable land, which, for some unclear reason, left a terrible feeling in the mind of that inflexible Benedictine monk, Aymeric Picaud, author of the first pilgrim's guide to the Saint James Way. We do so, leaving behind the countryside, the same countryside that every spring draws our attention with its endless fields of a showy plant, bitter rockrose, whose usefulness, among other things, is used to make a powerful sauce, mustard, whose strength serves as an excellent condiment when accompanying excellent meats.

Olite, also nestled among its wineries and vineyards, also stands out for possessing one of the most attractive monumental complexes in a land that, despite the criticism and indifference of the aforementioned Picaud, has always stood out as a leader within the limits of the French Way and has been pleasing not only to the countless succession of pilgrims, who, to this day, continue to raise dust along its paths, but also to travelers, both anonymous and famous, among whom stands out the figure of one of the greatest exponents of Spanish Romantic poetry, who could also be enchanted by the admirable constitution and excellence of the Royal Palace of Olite: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

With Gothic connotations, although its architecture displays details that follow one another, like an extraordinary timeless Meccano, dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries, its fantasy towers not only recall the characteristics of typical Frankish castles, possibly indicating the presence of extra-Pyrenean architects who also worked here, drawn by the adventure and opportunities associated with the pilgrimage route. In addition, this historic site, full of echoes, legends, and stories where the supernatural could not be absent, also houses the residence of the Kings of Navarre. It is worth highlighting, among many others, the marriage of the famous Prince of Viana to the German Princess Agnes of Cleves in 1439, the title currently held by Princess Eleanor of Bourbon.

Volvemos a Navarra, esa tierra admirable, que, por alguna circunstancia poco clara, dejó una terrible sensación en el ánimo de aquel inflexible monje benedictino, Aymeric Picaud, autor de la primera guía para peregrinos del Camino de Santiago y lo hacemos, dejando atrás la campiña, esa misma que todas las primaveras llama poderosamente la atención por sus infinitos campos de una vistosa planta, el jaramargo, cuya utilidad, entre otras cosas, sirve para elaboración de una potente salsa, la mostaza, cuya fortaleza sirve de excelente condimento a la hora de acompañar las excelencias de la carne.

Olite, recogido, también, a la vera de sus bodegas y sus viñedos, destaca, además, por poseer uno de los conjuntos monumentales más atractivos de una tierra, que, a pesar de las críticas y de la indiferencia del mencionado Picaud, ha destacado siempre como puntera dentro de los límites del Camino Francés y ha sido grata, no sólo con la incontable sucesión de peregrinos, que, hasta el día, continúan levantando polvo en sus caminos, sino también con viajeros, tanto anónimos como famosos, entre los que destaca la figura de uno de los máximos exponentes de la poesía romántica española, quien también pudo dejarse ensoñar por la admirable constitución y excelencia del Palacio Real de Olite: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

De connotaciones góticas, aunque en su arquitectura se adviertan detalles que se suceden, como en extraordinario mecano atemporal, comprendidos entre los siglos XIII y XV, sus torres de fantasía, no sólo recuerdan las características de los típicos castillos francos, señalando, posiblemente, la presencia de arquitectos extrapirenáicos que laboraron también aquí, atraídos por la aventura y las oportunidades afines al camino de peregrinación, sino, que, además, tenemos en este histórico solar, lleno de ecos, de leyendas y de historias donde lo sobrenatural no podía faltar, la residencia de los Reyes de Navarra, donde cabe destacar, entre otras muchas, los esponsales del famoso Príncipe de Viana con la princesa alemana Inés de Cléveris, en 1439, ostentando este título, en la actualidad, la princesa Leonor de Borbón.
