[ENG-SPN] That genius called Mariano José de Larra / Aquel genio llamado Mariano José de Larra
On Bailén Street, right in front of that neoclassical marvel, which is, without a shadow of a doubt, the Almudena Cathedral, there is a bust dedicated to one of the greatest figures of Spanish literature of all time: Mariano José de Larra.
Speaking precisely of times and recalling my own as a student, I remember, not without a certain nostalgia, that Larra and especially his invaluable "Selected Articles" were required reading in the Language and Literature class. Particularly noteworthy was the one entitled "Come Back Tomorrow." It induced the impression that Larra was a visionary, since, already in the 19th century, he knew how to psychoanalyze, better than Freud himself, what the Administration really is, as well as the dead-calm effect that continues to characterize it today: its civil service.
On the other hand, and whether it was, as is assumed, Cupid's poisoned darts that induced Larra to leave this world, seeking, like Van Gogh, his starry night, the truth is that at his funeral, which, according to the gossip of the time, was as popular as, or even more so than, that of Lope de Vega, a promising young man named José Zorrilla—and I call Don Juan Tenorio as my witness—made his extraordinary talent known, repeating, almost two thousand years later, the famous episode that characterized the lives of two illustrious contemporaries: John the Baptist and Christ. One had to decrease so that the other could increase.
