[ENG-SPN] Silió: The Mystery Carved in Stone / Silió: el misterio tallado en piedra

Silió is another of those Romanesque architectural gems shrouded in mystery. Despite being relentlessly attacked in modern times, it has survived to continue challenging us, not only with the enigma of its ancient origins but also with the hieroglyphic undercurrent that lies behind its unique sculptures.

Its dedication, intended to highlight the figures of the twin saints and practitioners of medicine, Facundus and Primitivo, appears to have been inherited from an earlier 10th-century monastery, whose builders also had no qualms about placing it precisely in a location where ancient cults had already been detected.

As in Lovecraft's terrifying tales, in this church of Silió, medieval stonemasons also reproduced, in sculptures whose original meaning we increasingly perceive as distant, a true narrative of mystery and terror. This narrative, however, channels our thoughts, with the presence of numerous monstrous and mythological elements, toward that eternal dualistic confrontation, present in all cultures and traditions—an eternal battle where differing opinions always create eternal and irreconcilable enemies.

Es, la de Silió, otra de esas arquitecturas románicas envueltas en el misterio, que, a pesar de haber sido inclemente atacada en tiempos modernos, sobrevivió para continuar retándonos, no sólo con el enigma de sus ancestrales orígenes, sino también, con ese jeroglífico trasfondo que subyace detrás de sus singulares esculturas.

Su advocación, encaminada a poner de manifiesto las figuras de los Santos Gemelos y practicantes de la Medicina, Facundo y Primitivo, parece que fue heredada de un monasterio anterior y del siglo X, cuyos artífices no tuvieron tampoco ningún reparo en situarlo precisamente en un lugar donde ya se detectaban cultos antiquísimos anteriores.

Como en las terroríficas historias de Lovecraft, también en esta iglesia de Silió los canteros medievales reprodujeron, en unas esculturas cuyo sentido original cada vez observamos más lejano, un autentico storytelling de misterio y terror, que, no obstante, encauza nuestros pensamientos, con la presencia de numerosos elementos monstruosos y mitológicos, hacia ese eterno enfrentamiento dualista, presente en todas las culturas y tradiciones, eterna batalla, donde la diferencia de criterios crea siempre enemigos eternos e irreconciliables.
