[ENG-SPN] Knights of Silence: The Hospitaller Footprint in Valladolid / Caballeros del Silencio: la Huella Hospitalaria en Valladolid

Funded primarily by the powerful Italian merchants of Amalfi, for the care and attention of pilgrims in the Holy Land, they too, following in the footsteps of their rivals, the Knights Templar, made the leap to Europe, settling in a Spain that, at the time, was considered, and not without reason, to be the precursor to the Crusades: the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem.

With a less intriguing history than that of the armed wing of the Cistercian order, the Templars, the Knights Hospitaller nevertheless fought shoulder to shoulder on the front lines alongside them, and in the end, after the plans of the Mallorcan scholar Ramón Llul to unify both orders were thwarted, they inherited many of their assets when the former were accused of heresy and subsequently suppressed.

But before all this happened, they also had important holdings, and in addition to serving pilgrims on their way to the tomb of the Apostle Saint James in Compostela, they collaborated in repopulation efforts, seeing how, under the protection of their encomiendas, towns grew, whose names undoubtedly included that origin. This is the case of a town in Valladolid, located near Simancas and its formidable Historical Archive, where a beautiful 12th-century Romanesque church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist still survives, surrounded by newly created apartments: Arroyo de la Encomienda.

Financiada principalmente por los poderosos comerciantes italianos de Amalfi, para la atención y el cuidado de los peregrinos en Tierra Santa, también ellos, siguiendo los pasos de sus rivales, los caballeros templarios, dieron el salto a Europa, estableciéndose en una España, que, por entonces, estaba considerada y no sin razón, como la antesala de las Cruzadas: la Orden del Hospital de San Juan de Jerusalén.

De historia menos intrigante que la del brazo armado del Císter, es decir, los templarios, los caballeros hospitalarios pelearon, no obstante, hombro con hombro en primera línea de batalla junto a ellos y al final, desbaratados los planes del sabio mallorquín, Ramón Llul por unificar ambas órdenes, fueron herederos de muchos de sus bienes, cuando aquellos fueron acusados de herejía y posteriormente suprimidos.

Pero antes de que todo esto sucediera, también tuvieron importantes posesiones y además de servir a los peregrinos que se dirigían hacia la tumba del Apóstol Santiago, en Compostela, colaboraron en labores de repoblación, viendo como al amparo de sus encomiendas crecían pueblos, en cuyo nombre, sin ningún género de duda, figuraba ese origen. Sería el caso de un pueblo de Valladolid, situado en las proximidades de Simancas y su formidable Archivo Histórico, donde todavía sobrevive, rodeada de pisos de novísima creación, una preciosa iglesia románica del siglo XII, dedicada a la figura de San Juan Bautista: Arroyo de la Encomienda.
