[ENG-SPN] Cities and siren songs: the Door of Saint Mary, Burgos / Ciudades y cantos de sirena: la Puerta de Santa María, de Burgos

Far from being something innocuous or inconsequential, any attentive traveler can come to the conclusion that there are cities that still today, centuries after their foundation, have that enigmatic siren song, with which to enthrall a visitor, who, consciously or not, from this, you allow yourself to be seduced by the vision of its most significant elements. In defense of this statement, we can give, as an example, that authentic heart of Old Castile, which, without going any further, is the city of Burgos. And within its genuine heritage, both artistic, architectural and of course, culturally complementary to other spectacular landmarks, such as the cathedral, it stands out, not only for its beauty, but also for the transcendental historical treasure that it reveals, one of the twelve doors that crossed the walls of the old medieval city: that of Saint Mary.

Completely remodeled in the 15th century, replacing that other one, which was originally built in the 11th century, when it was still roaming the dusty roads of exile, that well-paid champion, who was the Cid Campeador, notable figures participated in its execution. of the time, such as Felipe Bigarny, Cristóbal de Andino and Diego de Siloé, author, the latter, of another immeasurable work, such as the spectacular Golden Staircase, which stands out inside the neighboring cathedral. On a pyramidal scale and leaving aside the curious figure of the Archangel Saint Michael, at the top stands out the severe figure of the emperor, Charles I of Spain and V of Germany - the one, precisely, whose ship, dragged to the Asturian port of Tazones by a strong storm, he was about to die a better life when he and his entourage were mistaken for pirates by the humble fishermen - supported, however, by the characters, indomitable and with a deep nationalist sense, whose deeds and resistance made it possible the taking of Granada, in 1492: the legendary Counts of Castile -Fernán González, Diego Porcelos or Nuño Rasura- and the no less legendary Judges, represented by the figure of perhaps the most charismatic of them, Laín Calvo. Figures, all of them, that, of course, also constitute the basis of one of the great milestones of Spanish Literature: his Ballads.

Lejos de ser algo inocuo o intrascendente, cualquier viajero atento puede llegar a la conclusión de que hay ciudades que todavía hoy, siglos después de su fundación, poseen ese enigmático canto de sirenas, con el que embelesar a un visitante, que, consciente o no de ello, se va dejando seducir con la visión de sus elementos más significativos. En defensa de esta afirmación, podemos poner, como ejemplo, a ese auténtico corazón de la Vieja Castilla, que, sin ir más lejos, es la ciudad de Burgos. Y dentro de su genuino patrimonio, tanto artístico, como arquitectónico y por supuesto, culturalmente complementario de otros espectaculares hitos, como la catedral, destaca, no sólo por su belleza, sino también por el trascendental tesoro histórico que revela, una de las doce puertas que franqueaban las murallas de la vieja ciudad medieval: la de Santa María.

Remodelada por completo en el siglo XV, sustituyendo a aquella otra, que, originalmente se levantó en el siglo XI, cuando todavía campeaba por los polvorientos caminos del destierro, aquél bien pagado campeón, que fue el Cid Campeador, en su ejecución intervinieron notables figuras de la época, como Felipe Bigarny, Cristóbal de Andino y Diego de Siloé, autor, éste último, de otra obra inconmensurable, como es la espectacular Escalera Dorada, que destaca en el interior de la vecina catedral. A escala piramidal y dejando aparte la curiosa figura del Arcángel San Miguel, destaca, en la cima, la figura severa del emperador, Carlos I de España y V de Alemania -aquél, precisamente, cuya nave, arrastrada al puerto asturiano de Tazones por una fuerte tormenta, estuvo a punto de pasar a mejor vida cuando él y su séquito fueron confundidos con piratas, por los humildes pescadores- sustentada, no obstante, por los personajes, indómitos y con un profundo sentido nacionalista, cuyas gestas y resistencia, hicieron posible la toma de Granada, en 1492: los legendarios Condes de Castilla -Fernán González, Diego Porcelos o Nuño Rasura- y los no menos legendarios Jueces, representados por la figura del que quizás fuera el más carismático de ellos, Laín Calvo. Figuras, todas ellas, que, por supuesto, constituyen, también, la base de uno de los grandes hitos de la Literatura española: su Romancero.
