[ENG-SPN] Cervatos, Stone, and Desire / Cervatos, piedra y deseo

Some still believe that this Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Cervatos, located in the Cantabrian highlands of Alto Campoo, overlooking the Castilian plateau, yet with its lush forests, ancient caves, and the Cantabrian Sea—that timeless conduit of transmission—was once associated with the Knights Templar.

Today, we stand before one of the four Romanesque collegiate churches in Cantabria that inspire not only admiration but also a whole host of questions. Unlike the others, the practically intact erotic message of its countless sculptures continues to challenge the imagination and call into question the message of virtue and chastity that has generally characterized this architectural style.

Templar or not, the truth is that, after many centuries, in this unmissable heritage site of the Cantabrian community, the incorrigible Eros and Psyche continue their debate in sculptures immortalized by stone, a material made to last, defying, with their immutable permissiveness, the biases and constraints of the future.

Hay quien todavía piensa que esta Colegiata de San Pedro de Cervatos, situada en esa Cantabria del Alto Campoo que mira hacia la Meseta castellana, pero sin perder de vista los bosques frondosos, las cuevas ancestrales y ese vehículo inmemorial de transmisión que es el Cantábrico, fue o estuvo alguna vez relacionada con la Orden del Temple.

Nos encontramos hoy frente a una de las cuatro Colegiatas románicas de Cantabria que despiertan, no solo admiración, sino también toda una sucesión de interrogantes, pues, a diferencia de las demás, el mensaje erótico, prácticamente intacto, de sus innumerables esculturas continúa desafiando la imaginación y poniendo en duda el mensaje de virtud y castidad, que, por regla general, siempre ha caracterizado a este estilo arquitectónico.

Templaria o no, lo cierto es que, después de muchos siglos, en este imperdible bien patrimonial de la comunidad cántabra, todavía continúan debatiendo, en unas esculturas eternizadas por una materia, la piedra, hecha para perdurar, los incorregibles Eros y Psique, desafiando, con su inmutable permisividad, los sesgos y condicionamientos del futuro.
