[ENG-SPN] Between the Sil and the Miño: The Monastery that Guards the Secrets of the Forest / Entre el Sil y el Miño: El Monasterio que Guarda los Secretos del Bosque

In the municipality of Parada de Sil, nestled within an ancient forest where the age-old majesty of oaks and chestnut trees reigns, in a small corner that also recalls those significant forests that tested both the courage and nobility of heart of those melancholic knights—who, in essence, were the knights of the court of the mythical King Arthur—devoted to the mad passion of making the quest for the impossible and the wondrous, the Holy Grail, their life's project and the very framework of their thought, the dying breath of what was once one of the most important monasteries in Galicia is preserved: Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil.

The Romanesque architecture of Santa Cristina, whose foundations were possibly reinforced by earlier constructions, is a poem, its foundation and essence rooted in a marvelous geometric vision where balance, restraint, and perspective are amply rewarded by the intrusion of a rich colony of moss into its ancient stones. This moss, in addition to providing them with a venerable impermeability, bestows upon them a rare beauty, capable of making both the site and its surroundings not only an enchanting habitat, but also an enchanting one.

It goes without saying that in this part of the Ribeira Sacra, where the charismatic flows of two rivers, the Miño and the Sil, merge to sail towards the sea in the same direction, ancient Celtic traditions and their profound veneration of trees, especially oak and chestnut, also merged just a few meters from this sublime monastery with Christian evangelization. This evangelization saw in the famous Rule of Saint Benedict a spiritual model to follow, to the point that even now, in these futuristic dawns, where the Digital Age and its technological wonders surprise us more and more each day, these places, fortunately removed from the trivial, continue to remind us of something fundamental that we seem to have forgotten: that there are other worlds that also exist within this one.

En el término de Parada de Sil, recogido en un milenario bosque donde impera el maestrazgo milenario de robles y de castaños, en un pequeño rincón, que recuerda, además, esas significativas forestas que ponían a prueba, tanto el valor como la nobleza de corazón de esos caballeros melancólicos, que, en el fondo, fueron los caballeros de la Corte del mítico rey Arturo, entregados a la loca pasión de hacer de una búsqueda de lo imposible y de lo maravilloso, el Santo Grial, su proyecto de vida y su arquitectura de pensamiento, se conserva el hálito moribundo de lo que un día fue uno de los monasterios más importantes de Galicia: el de Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil.

La arquitectura románica de Santa Cristina, cuyos cimientos, posiblemente, se fortalezcan con construcciones anteriores, es un poema, que tiene, como base y fondo, esa maravillosa visión geométrica, donde equilibrio, mesura y perspectiva, se ven ampliamente recompensados por la intrusión, en sus milenarias piedras, de una abundante colonia de musgo, que las otorga, además de una venerable impermeabilidad, una belleza poco común, capaz de hacer, tanto del lugar, como del entorno, un hábitat, no sólo encantado, sino también encantador.

Huelga decir, que, en esta parte de la Ribeira Sacra, donde los carismáticos flujos de dos ríos, el Miño y el Sil, se funden para navegar hacia el mar en la misma dirección, las antiguas tradiciones celtas y su carismática veneración por los árboles, en especial, por el roble y el castaño, se fusionaron también a escasos metros de este sublime cenobio, con una evangelización, la cristiana, que veía, en la famosa Regla de San Benito, un modelo espiritual a seguir, hasta el punto de que todavía, en estos albores futuristas, donde la Era Digital y sus maravillas tecnológicas nos sorprenden cada día más, estos lugares, afortunadamente apartados de lo intrascendente, continúan recordándonos algo fundamental que parece que hemos olvidado: que hay otros mundos que también están en éste.
