[ENG-SPN] Asturias: The Impossible Leap / Asturias: El Salto Imposible

It's impossible to leave Valdedios without experiencing something akin to what astronaut Neil Armstrong felt when he set foot on the moon and uttered the famous phrase: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." For it's not often one has the opportunity to leap across several centuries by taking a mere fifty steps.

Indeed, that is, more or less, the insignificant distance that separates the Cistercian monastery of Santa María from another of Asturias' unmissable pre-Romanesque architectural gems, popularly known as "El Conventín": San Salvador.

Consecrated by the symbolic number of seven bishops in 893, during the reign of Alfonso III, the Monastery of San Salvador is another of those immeasurable enigmas of the past, whose beauty is surpassed only by a fierce resilience that evokes, in the minds of those who contemplate it, that enigmatic phrase of one of the fathers of Surrealism: ‘there are other worlds…’. But, fortunately, they are still in this one.

Imposible abandonar Valdedios, sin antes experimentar algo parecido a lo que sintió el astronauta Neil Armstrong cuando puso el pie en la luna y pronunció la famosa frase: ‘un pequeño paso para el hombre, pero un gran salto para la humanidad’. Y es que, pocas veces se tiene la oportunidad de saltar varios siglos andando apenas una miserable cincuentena de pasos.

En efecto, esa es, poco más o menos, la insignificante distancia que separa el monasterio cisterciense de Santa María de otra de las imperdibles arquitecturas prerrománicas asturianas, a la que popularmente se conoce como ‘el Conventín’: San Salvador.

Consagrado por el simbólico número de siete obispos en el año 893, durante el reinado de Alfonso III, el monasterio de San Salvador es otro de esos inconmensurables enigmas del pasado, cuya belleza se ve sólo superada por una feroz resiliencia, que remite, en el pensamiento de quienes lo contemplan, aquella enigmática frase de uno de los padres del Surrealismo: ‘hay otros mundos...’. Pero, afortunadamente, todavía están en éste.
