[ENG-SPN] An example of neo-Byzantine harmony / Un ejemplo de armonía neobizantina

Whenever I find myself in front of this sublime example of what we could well call the architecture of nostalgia, I cannot help but remember that timely reformer of that authentic icon of France, that the cathedral of Notre-Dame, thinking that, in part, , thanks to him and his complicit intention of returning to the architectures of the past as a fashion of good taste, today we can admire the harmonious beauty of the old, from the timeless framework of the modern: Violet le Duc.

Executed by the same architect who designed the Pantheon of Illustrious Men, Fernando Arbós y Tremanti, which, by the way, serves as a culmination of the presence of one of the oldest Black Virgins in Madrid, that of Atocha, and inaugurated in the year 1910, in the heart of Alcalá street, in front of the monumental Retiro Park and also a few meters away from that no less monumental hybrid of Sabatini's mastery, which is the popular Puerta de Alcalá, the church of San Manuel and San Benito, shows, in its design, an attractive neo-Byzantine or neo-Romanesque style, which powerfully attracts attention and where, between the lavish tower and the oriental minarets, there is no doubt, an outstanding dome, which, without reaching the dimensions of that of Saint Francis the Great - considered the third largest in Christianity and also located in Madrid - gives the complex a harmonious, if not magnetic, elegance.

Dome, which, as if it were a metaphorical chalice or inverted Grail, serves as a symbolic crown to an exemplary building, which, in short, could well be said to enjoy the seven virtues of Architecture, which John Ruskin called ' lamps', where mainly those of: strength, beauty, life and memory are noted.

Siempre que me encuentro frente a este sublime ejemplo de lo que bien podríamos denominar, como arquitectura de la nostalgia, no puedo evitar recordar aquel oportuno reformador de ese auténtico icono de Francia, que la catedral de Notre-Dame, pensando, que, en parte, gracias a él y a su cómplice intencionalidad de retornar a las arquitecturas del pasado como una moda de buen gusto, hoy podemos admirar la armónica belleza de lo antiguo, desde el marco atemporal de lo moderno: Violet le Duc.

Ejecutada por el mismo arquitecto que diseñó el Panteón de Hombres Ilustres, Fernando Arbós y Tremanti, que, dicho sea de paso, sirve de colofón a la presencia de una de las Vírgenes Negras más antiguas de Madrid, la de Atocha, e inaugurada en el año 1910, en pleno corazón de la calle de Alcalá, frente al monumental Parque del Retiro y a escasos metros, también, de ese no menos monumental híbrido de la maestría de Sabatini, que es la popular Puerta de Alcalá, la iglesia de San Manuel y San Benito, muestra, en su diseño, un atractivo estilo neobizantino o neorrománico, que llama poderosamente la atención y donde, entre la fastuosa torre y los orientales minaretes, destaca, no cabe duda, una cúpula sobresaliente, que, sin llegar a alcanzar las dimensiones de la de San Francisco el Grande -considerada como la tercera más grande de la Cristiandad y localizada también en Madrid- dota al conjunto de una armónica, cuando magnética elegancia.

Cúpula, que, como si fuera un metafórico cáliz o Grial invertido, sirve de corona simbólica a un edificio ejemplar, que, en resumidas cuentas, bien que podría decirse que goza de las siete virtudes de la Arquitectura, a las que John Ruskin denominaba ‘lámparas’, donde se advierten, principalmente, aquellas de: la fuerza, la belleza, la vida y el recuerdo.
