Garnitzenklamm (gorge) | icy trail - ice-free water

Before I carry on posting my photo trips from last year, I want to show you some images of my first photo trip in 2023: the Garnitzenklamm.

The Garnitzenklamm is a 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) long gorge near Hermagor in the Gail Valley (Gailtal) in Carinthia. There are a lot of waterfalls and awesome rock formations and you should not forget to visit this gorge when you are in Austria because it's really worth it.

Above and below are views down from one of the wooden bridges over the brook. I just love the colours and the textures of the rocks. And looking down on the other side of that bridge you can see these cool looking boulders in the middle of the brook.

If you want to hike till the end of the gorge you will need about 3 hours to get there, but there are also several circular routes that will take up to 5 hours.

When I was there on January 6, 2023, I hiked only the first part of the trail which took me about 2 hours one way because I took some photos on the way. The normal hiking time for this part would be about 45 minutes. The trail was quite icy in places and I was still recovering from the flu so I didn't want to overdo it and get home safe.

As said above, the trail was quite slippery at most places. There was not much snow in the gorge, but the trail was mostly covered by that white stuff. Also, the snow was frozen and thus slippery, as well as the parts of the trail that were not snowy, have been icy and slippery too.

To the left of the above telephoto shot of the brook is a huge waterfall, but because of the icy snow and rocks I couldn't get there. I was able to take the image below of the bottom part of this raging waterfall though.

It's Winter and so I was hoping for icy waterfalls, but there was more ice on my trail than in the brook. That's why my photos don't look much different from the images I have taken a few months earlier in Summer 2022. But if you look closer you might see that some of the rocks are covered in ice, but unfortunately there were no icicles.

A little further up the trail the brook is running slower and there are these little pools of water with small waterfalls. I love the green colour of the water.

Almost at the end of my hike there's another bridge across the gorge and below there are a few lovely waterfalls. These belong to my favourite waterfalls and I had to take some photos, of course 😀

The further trail leads along the right gorge wall and from there I could take another close-up photo of the upper waterfall. The rock and leaves behind the waterfall are certainly iced.

Once more I have to say that I love the colours and textures of the rocks and boulders which are quite unique, I believe.

And at the end of this post one last image of a small waterfall that I photographed on my way back to my van.

It has been snowing a lot in the past days and if I have enough time I want to visit this gorge again next weekend. I am sure that by then there will be icy waterfalls and I do hope to get some "cool" images ❄️

All photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and one of these lenses: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, Canon EF 16-35mm 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 L STM, SIGMA 105mm 1:2,8 DG MACRO HSM.

I more than enjoyed your lovely photos and I am sure that one can swim in some of those pools, in summer of course. Always amazing to see the power of water and how it can move those big rocks.
I don't know which of the photos is my favorite, as they are all great.

Ice cold is perfect Hannes, especially when one is used to taking cold showers. I do this every day, first hot and then I switch to cold. So I know what a fish feels like when it jumps out of the water 😉 !LOLZ

Oh, these cold showers are so cold that they are able to let you forget all pain that you feel, my friend ❄️

Sometimes I also remember that a cold shower in the morning makes you awake and you feel better than by taking a hot shower. So, sometimes I also start with a hot shower and then I switch to cold and start showering from my feet upwards until I think I am awake enough 😂 !LOLZ

That's exactly the idea, as the hot water relaxes the muscles and then the cold water restores them 😉

Hahaha, typical mountain goat to shower with cold water from the feet upwards. You have to hit the head first with the cold water to allow the startled brain to alert the rest of the body that cold is coming down to the toes. Then the toes can prepare the toenails to curl up when the shock of the cold water arrives 😁 !LOLZ

If I shower the head first with cold water I'll get a shock, stop showering and run back to my warm bed ... many times I don't get higher with the cold water as up to my knees anyway - tooooo cold ❄️☃️ !LOLZ

Well, at least you can try it in the one week of summer that you guys have and only up to your knees in winter will be totally ineffective. I read the other day about a doctor that hasn't bathed or showered for 15 years. He said that he was totally healthy, but I don't think that he lives in Africa, as after two days in our sun, he will stink so much that the dogs and cats will chase him around 🤣 !LOLZ

Oh, I remember summers when we had even two or three weeks of very hot sunshine, but that's quite some years ago when I was a kid. In these years we also had much more snow in winter - up to 1.5 meters in the valley 😅 !LOLZ

I've heard of a tribe where women wash only once in their lives, before marriage, and then never again. But they should still smell good.

Wow! Two or three weeks of very hot sunshine! Two or three weeks only! Incredulous.
And only when you were a kid. I feel so sorry for you Hannes.
All the more reason why you should visit South Africa in the summer, as then you will experience 5 months of very hot weather. You will return home with your skin as brown as a bear. Only the whites of your eyes will show 🤣😁😜 !LOLZ

Now if you can find what the women use to still smell good, then you can put it into spray bottles and sell it worldwide. Instant fame and riches.
But just don't name the product "Mountain Goat Aroma" as then it will fail from the start 😉🤣😝

When I was a kid, it was really very hot for some weeks in Summer, but that doesn't mean that we were freezing the rest of the Summer because it just wasn't that hot. In the past years the weather has changed and mostly there aren't more that 2 or three weeks of real Summer weather but more thunder storms als hail storms of which we didn't have a lot when I was young.

You may be sure that I would not return as a brown bear but rather as a red hummer 🤣 !LOLZ

The article didn't mention their secret to smell good without washing, honestly 😉 and you are right, the name "Mountain Goat Aroma" wouldn't help selling any product 😂🤣

Okay, I will stop teasing and you are right, as the weather has changed worldwide. We have just had many deaths and displacements again in Madagascar due to a violent storm and it is feared that the storm might also hit the shores in KZN.

Ah! Okay, so a red hummer it will be but luckily upon your return it will be cold and the cold will make you look like an old prune as it will wrinkle your skin 🤣 !LOLZ

Maybe what they use to smell good is a secret and all the more reason why you should investigate the source. You can go there and befriend 2 or 3 young girls and then you can secretly spy on what they use, but as I know you, it will not be the source that you would be interested in with so many girls 🤣

Wow this is one of the signs of Allah Subhanataala look at the mountain and see who created this being Jennifer and made the fountain flow. A very beautiful scene and a heartwarming scene that teaches us a lot.

Silky smooth long exposure, turquoise blue with red slated rock it's magical to see.

Dip into the cauldron looks inviting where flowing captures great detail along the rock face.

Sorry about the icy conditions would be no fun getting wet in winter months. Perhaps a little jealousy seeing the crisp clear cool waters swishing around.

It's winter, if it wasn't icy it wouldn't be fun. I have had my crampons with me, but because the trail was partly without snow I would have had to put them on and off every few meters. So I decided to keep them in the backpack and take no risk and hike back after I had taken photos of the best waterfalls anyway 😉

Mixed conditions makes it difficult to decide on what footwear to use, at least you managed to obtain superb photography once again to add to the collection.

We have about the same weather as you. Last week, we have had quite some snowfall and now it looks really wintry outside, but the temperatures have climbed up again and the snow is melting already.
