Tubers as one of the most expensive grown crops: A visit to our yam farm
Hello Hive.
This year has taught me a hard lesson about hoe tuber crops can be SK expensive and earn us some financial benefits if we go into commercial production of tubers.
Yams were the most expensive and a tuber cost as high as $3.5 this year.
The challenges with growing tubers is that it takes a longer amount of time for its life cycle.
Yams take at least 9months.
We make yam heaps as early as October last year before the final rains were over and planting has been since that time.
Even though more plantings are done subsequently, harvesting also follows that same sequence of planting
The yams seedlings dies and gets rotten but out of that a new life emerges that grows upward out of the ground.
Waiting for 9months to take gains from growing yams is such a long one.
And people prefer to plant corn anf other crops that won't take more than 3months .
Within that yams 9+month waiting time, one would have grown corn 3x repeatedly.
While investing in any commercial crops, one must be willing to also put into consideration this waiting time and if it is worth it growing either yam or corn.
Here the yams have undergone. Mulching.
We use old debris to cover the top of the heap were the seedlings have been planted underneath from excess heat that can make the seed rot beyond regrowth.
This way the yams receives minimal heat.
A portion of the yam farms have been covered by grass as you can see here.
Weeding should commence almost immediately and you can see just how busy we are about to become even at just that Starr of a new farming season.

I never see where yam was farm and harvest before.
Your shared post have really enlightened me but I wish to go my village to plant or learn from you @monica-ene
No wonder yams are more expensive considering the time it takes for it to yield compared to compared to maize
