Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

My first premium phone for a reason and a birthday gift to myself

20260720_134229.jpg

Buying a premium phone for myself was never in plan because I preferred to use the camera instead for my photography, during my trips. However, during my last trip to Ujjain, I faced trouble in using my camera, as they did not allow to use the camera just because it was a camera...Ya, that old mindset and rules still in force, you can use a mobile but you cannot use a camera. I still gave it a try and they caught me and threatened to impose a hefty fine and that is when I decided I need a premium phone for such places - where the system does not try to understand the reality and instead impose rules that were from decades back. Today, smart phones are nowhere less than a premium camera, but you simply cannot defend yourself everywhere.

As my primary reason of buying the phone was camera, after doing some initial analysis, we decided to go the nearest Reliance mall to see and feel different models. Our primary target was iPhone, Pixel and Samsung and after looking at all of them, I went in favor of Samsung as I have been now accustomed with their UI. Their latest flagship model is S26 and that was the reason, they had hefty discount on S25. However, there were no stock of S25, as these stores always go for fresh ones. They said their stock may come after 2-3 days but there is no guarantee. However, they matched the discount that are available online - I was a bit surprised on that.

Deciding to go for S25 instead of S26 was primarily for monetary reason, as the camera in both are almost equal and my focus was on the camera only. And choosing between S25 and S25 Ultra was a tough choice, the Ultra providing a 200 MP camera, thus having superior provision to capture high resolution photos. But that comes at a price - it eats up the battery pretty fast and fills the storage as well. I have been using the phone for more than 15 days and quite disappointed with the battery performance, it's like I have to do a full recharge every day. The boy is saying, it's primarily because of a loophole in their last security patch and Samsung may fix it, but I think, they might have done that purposely to promote their new model S26 ? Only time will tell.

And I am not a good online shopper, so the boy did find out all discounts and ordered with some open box service, in which they will open the box and show the phone. Unfortunately, these premium phones do not come with chargers - what a niche way to extract more money from customers !!! Just because you are buying a premium phone, they think, you can spend couple more thousand for the charger...

As we prepared to come to Kochi for his admission in IIMK, this came handy, I no longer need to take the camera. So going forward, you will see photos from this new phone, I still feel, the Sony Mirror less outperforms this - it captures better in less size. But only where that is not allowed, this will come handy plus convenience......

A good gift for yourself, my friend. I don't know much about cell phones since for the last few years I've only bought Redmi phones, which I find good, especially the camera. That said, I always try to choose the most economical ones for me, otherwise they completely throw off my budget. What's so special about taking photos with a phone and not with a camera? There are definitely some rules we'll never understand.

Your post is a carbon copy of almost exactly the same thought processes and experience that I went through, it made me smile.

my primary reason of buying the phone was camera

Same. My old mobly no longer could cut the mustard, it took that long to open camera from lock screen, the photo moment had already passed, quality of photos also well behind what was now available lol. Also S25 titanium case, and privacy glass screen.

Their latest flagship model is S26 and that was the reason, they had hefty discount on S25.

Yes. Watched Amazon like a hawk for months and realised that certain flavours of the S25 Ultra were being heavily discounted in sequence, to shift stock now that the S26 was on the market. So sat like a kingfisher for weeks waiting for the deal I wanted to appear.

the Ultra providing a 200 MP camera, thus having superior provision to capture high resolution photos.

The camera ability is astounding, epic zoom, even 0.6 wide lens for small room.

I have been using the phone for more than 15 days and quite disappointed with the battery performance, it's like I have to do a full recharge every day.

Was surprised at this myself, considering the weight of the phone and size of the battery, but do find myself using it a lot due to the sublime user experience, so..

Unfortunately, these premium phones do not come with chargers - what a niche way to extract more money from customers !!!

Amazed at this aspect, however did the due diligence, bought a Samsung 45 Watt fast charger designed for the unit and set the max battery to 80% to protect the phone battery. The recharge time is crazy, 1% -> 80% in ~30mins 😐

Things Ive learnt since having this phone:

  • Worth buying all the peripherals, proper charger, high end screen protector, high end case to look after the phone
  • Camera behaviour is better than expected
  • Access to all of latesf One UI features is awesome
  • The integrated S Pen doesn't have Bluetooth, but the user experience is still cool. Lock screen note taking with pen is quality feature
  • Worth spending a lot of time in Settings tinkering to achieve max performance
  • Features I never knew about make my day better, AI Call screening jumps to mind!
  • The screen, ecen behing a high end screen protector is lush
  • Due to all the Apps this phone can run at max performance, simple day to day tasks have had a dramatic improvement in ease and speed.

I'm not sure why I just went on a mobile phone review, think I was baited into it by the original post lol.

I forgot about the integrated S Pen, don't know, if I will use it even, have to learn how to use...:) And my son did some set up to have better efficiency, but still its a beast in eating power.

You're right, the cameras are almost the same, and buying an ultra version of an older model is honestly always the best answer.

Congrats! It's always really exciting to get a new phone, but a lot of work too. I just got a new Google Pixel and it has been an interesting process.

Yes, migrating to the new one is a big task, however, my son did everything, these kids are smarter than us. He moved everything from old to new in just a hour.

That's awesome! They have made it easier than it used to be, but there are still little hiccups here and there.

This is awesome!
Getting a premium device for yourself as your birthday gift is one of best things you could do for yourself.

Unfortunately, these premium phones do not come with chargers - what a niche way to extract more money from customers...

Yes, I read that Samsung putting charging head among their new phones packs which is quite disappointing. Now your post is a confirmation on that. How can one buy an expensive phone like that without charger? That would be another expense.

I'm a big fan of Samsung and I am currently using the older version which is Note 10+. I hope someday in the future, I will upgrade to a later version.
