Así exactamente como lo leíste, para hacer esta pintura tarde aproximadamente doce años en terminarla, pero vamos que ahora te cuento.
That's exactly right—it took me about twelve years to finish this painting, but I'll tell you all about it now.

The Eternal Painting
Vamos a irnos en carretera a un lugar donde el sol se siente sabroso, donde las montañas grises nos rodean y donde el cují, los cactus y los chivos nos acompañan para darnos la bienvenida a un caserío llamado El Cartero.
Let's hit the road to a place where the sun feels warm, where gray mountains surround us, and where cují, cacti, and goats are there to welcome us to a hamlet called El Cartero.
Allí existe una capilla que tiene como patrona a la Virgen de Candelaria. En este lugar vivía mi abuela por lo que desde muy pequeña he ido para allá. Entonces por allá en 2014 decidí pintar a esta Virgen para donarla a la capilla, sin embargo, no fue hasta el 2026 que por fin la terminé.
There is a chapel there dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria. My grandmother used to live there, so I’ve been going there since I was very young. Back in 2014, I decided to paint this image of the Virgin to donate it to the chapel; however, it wasn’t until 2026 that I finally finished it.
Para que tengan una idea, cuando comencé el cuadro llegue hasta acá, solo que, sin el rostro. Fue como una primera mancha para ver los colores, sin embargo, esta foto realmente me la paso un tío que la metió en Gemini para que le pintara el rostro y así tener una guía.
To give you an idea, when I started the painting, I got this far—but without the face. It was just a rough sketch to test the colors. However, a friend actually sent me this photo; he uploaded it to Gemini so I could paint the face and have a guide.
A todas estas, ese tío fue el que me empujo a terminar el cuadro. Como ves, había mucho por hacer y corregir y lo primero era buscar una imagen de referencia de la Virgen de Candelaria para poder detallar todos los elementos que tenía la imagen.
All that said, that guy was the one who pushed me to finish the painting. As you can see, there was a lot to do and correct, and the first step was to find a reference image of the Virgin of Candelaria so I could add detail to all the elements in the painting.
Para pintar esta obra estuve usando pinturas al óleo. Principalmente los colores rojo escarlata y el carmesí, amarillo ocre y limón, azul cerúleo y ultramar, un poco de verde viridian, blanco por supuesto y dorado.
To paint this piece, I used oil paints. Mainly scarlet red and crimson, ochre yellow and lemon yellow, cerulean blue and ultramarine blue, a little viridian green, white, of course, and gold.
Para mí lo primero fue rehacer las manchas de toda la obra comenzando con el fondo que fue una mezcla entre azul, amarillo, rojo y blanco variando la mezcla en distintas zonas del fondo para darle dinamismo y no se vea tan plano. Lo mismo paso con esa túnica roja donde mezcle el rojo carmesí con el verde para lograr esas tonalidades más bajas.
For me, the first step was to repaint the brushstrokes throughout the entire piece, starting with the background, which was a mixture of blue, yellow, red, and white. I varied the mixture in different areas of the background to give it a sense of movement and prevent it from looking too flat. I did the same with that red tunic, where I mixed crimson red with green to achieve those darker shades.
Algo que me costó mucho hacer fue el niño, la cara del niño tiene proporciones muy diferentes al adulto. Primero me había salido esa cara de la imagen izquierda, es tan horrible que mi madre que veía el cuadro a cada rato me dijo de una vez que lo cambiara. Y en este punto tuve que consultar con un amigo que me ayudo enviándome esta guía.
One thing I really struggled with was the boy—a child’s face has very different proportions than an adult’s. At first, I had drawn the face shown in the image on the left; it was so awful that my mother, who kept looking at the painting, told me right away to change it. At that point, I had to ask a friend for help, and he sent me this guide.
Gracias a esa guía que me mando mi amigo pude lograr un rostro que se vea más parecido a un niño.
Thanks to the guide my friend sent me, I was able to create a face that looks more like a child's.
Mi parte favorita de pintar fue el traje de la Virgen, sobre todo porque la imagen de referencia tiene muchísimos detalles. La tela esta adornada con formas orgánicas que hice en color dorado. Esta pintura la hice en febrero, hace poco la volví a ver y el rojo absorbió por completo el brillo del dorado y ahora esta marrón, debo hacer su respectivo retoque.
My favorite part of painting was the Virgin’s gown, especially because the reference image has so many details. The fabric is adorned with organic shapes that I painted in gold. I painted this in February; I looked at it again recently and noticed that the red had completely absorbed the gold’s shine, so now it looks brown. I need to touch it up.
Asi fue el resultado final, la verdad es que tiene cosas muy buenas esta pintura, como dije antes me encanta como quedo el traje, las tonalidades del fondo, pero en cuanto a las figuras sí, hay cosas que se tiene que mejorar. Todo es cuestión de seguir practicando esta técnica del óleo.
So that was the final result. The truth is, this painting has some really good aspects—as I said before, I love how the costume turned out and the shades in the background—but as for the figures, yes, there are things that need improvement. It’s all a matter of continuing to practice this oil painting technique.
Como esta obra era para donarla a la iglesia toco embalarla y viajar con ella casi que al día siguiente. Al siguiente día era la celebración del de la Virgen de Candelaria y todos los que fueron a la misa quedaron muy contentos con la obra. Soy feliz de por fin terminar esta obra que me llevo tantos años pintar.
Since this painting was meant to be donated to the church, I had to pack it up and travel with it almost the very next day. The next day was the feast of Our Lady of Candelaria, and everyone who attended Mass was very pleased with the painting. I’m happy to have finally finished this painting, which took me so many years to complete.
