Wounds Left by the Earthquakes in My Area
Although I no longer post on Hive every day, I feel I must start this post by apologizing to my regular readers, as I want to vent once again about the earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week. It is hard to believe, but the air here in my area is thick with this somber topic. At home, the television and social media inundate us with information about rescue efforts and the death toll—which stands at 2,954 as I write this, a figure we have no doubt will continue to rise. Out on the streets, everyone talks about their personal experiences, and I see families learning to live in nearby squares and public spaces; even at the relief collection centers, the conversation remains the same. Despite the positivity of those helping out, the central issue—the earthquakes—is the one thing that haunts us twenty-four hours a day... I simply cannot write about anything else, especially after helping my friend Flor yesterday 💔
Aunque ya no publico a diario en Hive, siento que debo comenzar este post disculpándome con quienes regularmente me leen porque nuevamente quiero escribir otro desahogo referente a los recientes terremotos en Venezuela de la semana pasada. Parece mentira, pero todo lo que se respira aquí en mi área es este triste tema. Si estoy en casa, la televisión y las redes sociales nos inundan de información sobre los rescates y las muertes, que en este momento que escribo este post, la cifra de fallecidos es de 2.954, y no dudamos que seguirá aumentando. Si estoy en las calles, todos hablan de sus experiencias personales, o veo a las familias aprendiendo a vivir en las calles y plazas cercanas; y si estoy en los centros de acopio el tema sigue siendo lo mismo, porque a pesar del positivismo de la gente que ayuda, el tema central, los terremotos, es lo único que nos persigue las 24 horas del día... No puedo escribir sobre otra cosa, y menos después de la experiencia de haber ayudado a mi amiga Flor ayer 💔
Most of these photos are from the Altagracia parish in Caracas—the area where I currently live and where several of my fellow national choir members also reside. A couple of weeks ago, I shared a post about a Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) concert I attended as a birthday gift from my friend Flor; she sang the most beautiful and melancholic melodies from my favorite anime alongside the orchestra. I mention her because, following the earthquakes, her building was one of the hardest hit in the area; in fact, only after professional inspections did she and her family decide to reclaim their apartment, which experts say remains habitable. Her parents are elderly, so my brother Douglas and I decided to help her clean and restore her home—which is on the sixth floor, and they still don't feel safe using the elevators. The other residents of the building were doing the same, and indeed, many people on the block are now returning—more calmly—to clean and repair their homes. I am happy for them all, yet what I see still breaks my heart, because their lives have clearly changed forever. I don't want to show too many photos of her, her family, or her home, but she did allow me to take a few pictures of her apartment and certain parts of the building.
La mayoría de estas fotografías son la Parroquia Altagracia de Caracas, la zona donde vivo actualmente, y también habitan aquí varios de mis compañeros de la coral nacional. Hace un par de semanas compartí un post sobre un concierto de Saint Seiya "Los Caballeros del Zodiaco" al cual asistí como regalo de cumpleaños de mi amiga Flor, quien cantó junto a la orquesta las melodías más bellas y triste de mi animé preferido; hago mención a ella, porque desde esa misma tarde de los terremotos su edificio fue uno de los más afectados de la zona, y de hecho, luego de que lo hayan revisado algunos profesionales es que ella y su familia han decidido recuperar su apartamento, el cual, según los expertos puede seguir siendo habitable. Sus padres con mayores, así que mi hermano Douglas y yo decidimos ayudarla con la limpieza y recuperación de su casa, que de hecho, es en un sexto piso y no se atreven a usar los ascensores aún. Junto a nosotros, el resto de las personas que viven en ese edificio estaban haciendo lo mismo, y de hecho varias personas en la cuadra, ahora con más calma están regresando, limpiando y reparando sus hogares. Me alegro por todos ellos, pero lo que ven mis ojos me sigue partiendo el alma, porque evidentemente sus vidas cambiaron para siempre. No quiero mostrar tantas fotos de ella, su familia o su casa, pero me permitió tomar algunas de su apartamento y ciertas zonas del edificio.
I was really surprised that everything we hauled to the dump site was immediately claimed by people in the area—even the two broken televisions from Flor’s family; when we went back to drop off another load, they were already gone from where we’d left them. A local man said he needed the copper. We brought down a large, heavy, and badly battered sofa—though perhaps not from the earthquakes; I think it was already in rough shape before that—but the homeless people near the church asked for it so the children would have somewhere to sit. Later, when we brought down the table, others asked for that too, and what pained me most was that they thanked us. It hurt deeply because, after all, those items were damaged and essentially trash, yet for those who had lost everything, they represented a small measure of help. It has been raining at night, and whenever I pass by one of those tents and see babies inside, I feel terrible that they don't have a home to sleep in. I don't understand why enough areas for displaced people haven't been set up—I suppose it's because of the sheer number of people involved—but despite the pain, every time we visited the debris site, there were always people arriving with donations; I even saw our priest from the Church of Our Lady of Altagracia helping people out.
Me sorprendió mucho que todo lo que llevamos camino al basurero inmediatamente era tomado por gente que se encuentra en la zona, incluso los dos televisores rotos de la familia de Flor, cuándo volvimos al lugar a botar algo más ya no estaban donde los dejamos. Un hombre de la zona dijo que necesitaba el cobre. Bajamos un sofá grande, pesado y muy herido, quizás no por los terremotos, creo que ese sofá ya estaba muy mal desde antes, pero la gente sin hogar cerca de la iglesia nos lo pidieron para que se sentaran los niños, y luego, cuando bajamos la mesa, otra gente la pidió, y lo que más me dolió fue que nos dieron las gracias. Me dolió mucho, porque después de todo esas cosas estaban dañadas y eran basura, pero para quienes perdieron todo significan una pequeña ayuda. Ha estado lloviendo en las noches, y cuando paso cerca de una de esas carpas y veo a bebés dentro de ellas me siento muy mal de que no tengan un hogar para pasar la noche. No entiendo por qué no se han activado suficientes zonas para dignificados, creo que es porque es gran cantidad de personas, pero a pesa del dolor, en cada visita que hacíamos al lugar donde llevábamos los escombros siempre había gente que llegaba con donativos, incluso vi a nuestro sacerdote de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia ayudando a las personas.
Flor didn't sleep at home that day; as soon as we finished, they preferred to return to her family's place—in fact, the bathroom still isn't usable, as there is a lot of repair work needed in that area. Douglas asked me to go help at the collapse site in San Bernardino, but I have to admit I was exhausted from carrying such heavy items down the stairs. For the first time all week, I decided to stay put and rest; I really needed it. As you can see in the photo above, Douglas is very strong—he could keep hauling rubble all night long. Meanwhile, my wife was with Kimberly at the headquarters of the System of Orchestras and Choirs, making sketchbooks for the children—an idea they came up with to save money. That Friday afternoon marked the first time I was alone since the earthquakes and the first day I was apart from my wife, as we were each helping in different ways. Just as I lay down intending to watch some TV (even though the internet connection remains terrible), my other friend, Leonardo, told me that the San Judas Tadeo School in La Pastora had just collapsed 💔
Flor no durmió en su casa ese día, apenas terminamos prefirieron volver donde su familia, de hecho, el baño aún no se puede usar, hay mucho que reparar en esa zona. Douglas me dijo para ir a ayudar al derrumbe de San Bernardino, pero les confieso que quedé muy cansado de bajar cosas tan pesadas de las escaleras, y por primera vez en la semana decidí quedarme descansando, lo necesitaba. Como pueden ver en la foto de arriba, Douglas es muy fuerte, ese puede seguir cargando escombros toda la noche, y mi esposa estaba con Kimberly en la sede del Sistema de Orquestas y Coros elaborando cuadernos de dibujo para los niños, fue una idea que tuvieron para economizar; el Viernes en la tarde fue mi primera vez en soledad desde los terremotos y el primer día que me separé de mi esposa, ya que cada quien ayudaría de manera distinta, y justo cuando me acosté con la intensión de ver algo de televisión, (aunque el internet sigue pésimo), mi otro amigo, Leonardo, me dijo que se acababa de derrumbar el Colegio San Judas Tadeo en la Pastora 💔
A few days ago, a building collapsed in Guatire—near where one of the choir tenors lives—and the news Leonardo shared with me about the San Judas Tadeo School reignited a fear that had been starting to subside: the possibility that nearby buildings might keep collapsing, even without aftershocks. It is happening; many structures in Caracas are severely damaged, so it is only natural for me to be afraid while walking the streets, constantly watching out for falling debris. The San Judas Tadeo school and church are just a few meters from the entrance to Puerta Caracas, at the end of La Pastora, and I lived for ten years at House No. 10 in Puerta Caracas. That area was my first home in this city, so I felt the pain and fear shared by everyone I know there. I decided not to go because I was truly exhausted, though mental rest remains elusive. I think the time has finally come to visit my mom in Aragua; I’m not sure how much of a distraction it will be—since the cities are close—but I know seeing her will help calm me down. We’ve done a lot here in Caracas, and there will still be plenty to do when I return midweek, because this is just the beginning; meanwhile, my work—which is entirely music-based—is at a standstill, with no rehearsals or concerts scheduled for the moment. Even the gym where I’ve been training since January hasn't opened yet, as the area is still undergoing structural assessments... Yes, life has come to a halt, and those of us who are safe are the ones who must take the lead in rebuilding our cities, each of us contributing in whatever way we can.
Hace unos días se cayó un edificio en Guatire, cerca de donde vive uno de los tenores de la coral, y ahora la noticia que me daba Leonardo sobre el Colegio San Judas Tadeo despertó en mí un miedo que ya se estaba calmando, y esa es la posibilidad de que se sigan derrumbando las edificaciones cercanas, incluso sin replicas sísmicas. Eso está pasando, muchas estructuras en Caracas están muy lastimadas, así que no es para menos mi miedo de caminar por las calles y estar pendientes de que no nos caigan escombros encima. El colegio y la Iglesia San Judas Tadeo está a solo unos metros de la entrada de Puerta Caracas, al final de la Pastora, y yo viví por 10 años en la casa 10 de Puerta Caracas. Esa zona fue mi primer hogar en esta ciudad, así que sentí el dolor y el miedo de todos mis conocidos. Decidí no ir porque realmente me sentía muy cansado, pero mentalmente el descanso no llega. Creo que al fin ha llegado el momento de poder visitar a mi mamá en Aragua, pero no sé que tanto me despeje allá, ya que son ciudades cercanas, pero sé que ver a mi mamá me ayudará a calmarme. Hemos hecho mucho aquí en Caracas, y de todos modos habrá mucho que hacer cuando vuelva a mediados de semana, porque esto apenas comienza, y mi trabajo, que es netamente musical está parado, no hay ensayos ni conciertos programados de momento. Ni siquiera ha abierto el gym donde he estado entrenando desde Enero porque la zona aún se encuentra en evaluaciones de las edificaciones cercanas... Sí, la vida se detuvo, y quienes estamos bien somos los protagonistas de recuperar nuestras ciudades, cada quien desde lo que puede hacer.
Let’s not judge those who don’t act the same way we do; everyone has their own struggles. Some take active roles, others share on social media, some cook, some pray, some offer companionship, and so on. I’ve been writing here on Hive because blogging is my passion—I’ve been writing about my life experiences for years—yet I share almost nothing on my social media accounts; I feel those platforms are oversaturated with information. Sometimes, the person who remains silent is doing more than the one who is constantly watching what others are doing. Take my case, for example: I dedicated a large part of my Friday solely to a friend’s home and family—a friend who, just a week ago, had started sleeping on the streets and thought she had lost everything. But she hadn't; now she has the chance to reclaim part of her life. I didn't have to spend the whole day at a relief collection center or show up with a shovel in La Pastora or La Guaira; my mission for Friday was right close to home. It will take months for us to heal from these wounds, so let’s take it one step at a time and be good Venezuelans—because that is truly what we need right now 🙏
No juzguemos a quien no actúa igual que nosotros, todo el mundo tiene sus propias grietas. Algunos participan activamente, otros comparten en redes sociales, otros cocinan, otros oran, otros acompañan, etc. Yo he estado escribiendo aquí en Hive porque mi blog es mi pasión, y todo lo que vivo lo escribo desde hace años, pero en mis redes sociales no comparto casi nada, creo que las redes están saturadas de información. A veces quien está en silencio está haciendo más que el que está pendiente de qué hacen los demás. Fíjense en mi caso, dediqué gran parte de mi Viernes solamente a la casa y la familia de una amiga, una amiga que hace una semana comenzó a dormir en las calles y pensó que lo había perdido todo, pero no, ahora tiene la oportunidad de recuperar parte de su vida, y no tuve que ir a pasar el día entero en un centro de acopio o llegar con una pala hasta La Pastora o la Guaira, mi misión de Viernes estaba cerca de casa. Pasarán meses para recuperarnos de estas heridas, así que vayamos poco a poco siendo buenos venezolanos, porque eso es lo que realmente necesitamos ahora 🙏
I'm sad about the devastation the earthquake caused, but happy to hear your family and music friend survived. The destruction looks surreal as it caught people off guard. I pray that all will be well soon and for the displaced family and those who lost loved ones.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new

Hello everyone I hope you are all good and well today in this post is some of the evidence to prove my case
If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

Hola @jesuslnrs, estoy en Valencia/Venezuela y la tristeza nos tiene envuelto, pero sabiendo que todo pasa es muy fuerte pensar en los que se fueron, pero peor es pensar en los niños que se quedaron solitos, nada fácil, pensar en eso. Ver una y otra vez los videos, eso es muy triste.
Todo pasa por un aprendizaje, pero ya no quiero aprender más sobre estos eventos, quiero aprender un idioma, poder aprender los primeros auxilios, pero de esto es muy duro amigo. ¡Dios te bendiga!
Si publicar sobre esto te ayuda a superarlo, también vale. Yo no he podido escribir nada. Esperando mi turno para estar allá.

que tristeza esto de Venezuela, gracias a Dios muchos no pasé por algo tan fuerte, pero hay que orar por los que están en situaciones dificiles, ayudar lo mas que se puedea
Amigo me alegra saber que estas bien físicamente y que por este medio expresas tu sentir, es muy duro todo lo que hemos vivido como sociedad los últimos 30 años, tus últimas palabras estan llenas de sabiduría tenemos que ser empáticos, a mí me costó volver a publicar en hive no me salian las palabras me mantuve publicabdo en WhatsApp e intentando enlazar las personas que querian colaborar, por ejemplo el que donaba comida o insumos médicos con los que tenian transporte y los que se ofrecian manejar o llevarla. Siento que de esa forma puse mi granito de arena. Ahora que estoy mejor emocionalmente es que regresé, con publicacion que tenía en pausa, también agarre dias de silencio y me desconecte de todo, lo necesitaba.
