[ENG/ESP] An afternoon with love in Fressier
Happy Sunday, dear friends. I sincerely hope you are enjoying a peaceful and joyful day with your loved ones. Today, I want to share with you an experience that left me feeling happy—a very special outing my father and I had to the Fressier bakery, one of his favorite places.
Feliz domingo queridos amigos, espero sinceramente que estén pasando un día lleno de tranquilidad y alegría con sus seres queridos. Hoy quiero compartirles una experiencia que me dejó con el corazón contento, una salida muy especial que tuvimos con mi padre a la panadería Fressier, uno de sus rincones favoritos.
My father is 83 years old, and although he no longer has the vitality he once had, his spirit remains bright. We strive to include him in our outings whenever time and work permit. His company always fills us with wisdom, and it is gratifying to see him enjoy simple but meaningful moments with us.
A few days ago, he confessed to us with a nostalgic tone that he hadn't been to Pastelería Fressier in a long time, that place he loves so much for its friendly service and excellent customer care, located across from Bolívar Avenue, on the corner of Colegio del Angel in the municipality of Maneiro in the state of Nueva Esparta on Margarita Island. He said no more, but his gaze said it all. So, without telling him anything, my husband and I decided to surprise him. We picked him up one afternoon, telling him we were going for a drive near the sea. He gladly accepted, unaware of the surprise that awaited him.
The weather was perfect; not too hot and not too cold. As soon as we parked in front of the bakery, his face changed immediately. His smile gradually spread until he burst out laughing and said, “You're amazing!” It was a lovely moment; he looked so happy.
Mi padre tiene 83 años, y aunque ya no tiene la vitalidad de antes, su ánimo sigue siendo brillante. Nos esforzamos por incluirlo en nuestras salidas cada vez que el tiempo y el trabajo lo permiten. Su compañía siempre nos llena de sabiduría, es gratificante verlo disfrutar de momentos sencillos pero significativos con nosotros.
Hace unos días, nos confesó con un tono nostálgico que hacía tiempo que no iba a la Pastelería Fressier, ese lugar que tanto aprecia por el buen trato y el servicio excelente, ubicada frente a la avenida Bolívar, esquina Colegio del Angel en el municipio Maneiro del estado nueva Esparta en Isla Margarita. No dijo más, pero su mirada decía todo. Así que sin anticiparle nada, mi esposo y yo decidimos sorprenderlo. Lo pasamos a buscar una tarde, diciéndole que iríamos a dar una vuelta cerca del mar. Él aceptó con gusto, sin imaginar la sorpresa que le aguardaba.
El clima estaba perfecto; ni muy caliente ni muy fresco. Ya cuando estábamos aparcando frente a la pastelería, su rostro cambió de inmediato. Su sonrisa se fue dibujando poco a poco hasta que soltó, entre risas, un espontáneo “¡eres tremenda!”. Fue un momento encantador, se veía tan feliz.
We entered the cozy establishment together, which has different areas: one outdoors surrounded by plants, and another air-conditioned with areas for more private meetings and informal zones. My father decisively chose the most intimate corner, wanting to fully enjoy the experience and our company.
Entramos juntos al acogedor local, que cuenta con distintos ambientes; uno al aire libre rodeado de plantas, y otro climatizado con áreas para reuniones más privadas y zonas informales. Mi padre, con decisión, escogió el rincón más íntimo, queriendo disfrutar a plenitud la experiencia y nuestra compañía.
Although we had already had lunch, we decided to share a dessert. They served us quickly, and in the blink of an eye, our table was filled with flavor and joy. I ordered a strong black coffee—just how we Cubans like it—and my husband and father enjoyed a delicious plum pie. Since our son couldn't join us that afternoon, my father, always attentive to details, ordered two slices of apple pie to take home for him. That gesture of his always surprises me.
Aunque ya habíamos almorzado, decidimos compartir un postre. No tardaron nada en atendernos, y en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, nuestra mesa estaba llena de sabor y alegría. Yo pedí un café bien negrito —como nos gusta a los cubanos—, y mi esposo junto a mi padre se deleitaron con un exquisito pay de ciruela. Como nuestro hijo no pudo acompañarnos esa tarde, mi padre, siempre pendiente de los detalles, pidió dos cuñas de pastel de manzana para llevarle. Ese gesto tan suyo que siempre sorprende.
I am not exaggerating when I say that everything was delicious. The coffee, strong and low in sugar, was just the way I like it. The plum pie, according to the expert tasters in my family, was fresh and just sweet enough, without being cloying. The cakes to take away were impeccably packaged, as if they too wanted to prolong the sweetness of the moment.
When we asked for the check, we were treated with the same kindness with which the visit had begun. My father looked happy. It was clear that he had enjoyed this simple but meaningful outing, and we were also glad to have given him that moment of happiness.
No exagero al decir que todo estaba delicioso. El café, fuerte y bajo en azúcar, era justo como me gusta. El pay de ciruela, según los expertos catadores de mi familia, estaba fresco y con el dulzor justo, sin llegar a empalagar. Los pasteles para llevar estaban impecablemente empacados, como si también quisieran prolongar la dulzura del momento.
Al pedir la cuenta, fuimos atendidos con la misma amabilidad con que inició la visita. Mi padre se veía feliz. Se notaba que había disfrutado de esa sencilla pero significativa salida, y nosotros también estábamos alegres de haberle dado ese momento de felicidad.
So, dear friends of this beautiful community, I share this experience with you as an example that you don't need a big celebration to create a beautiful memory. Sometimes, a cup of coffee shared with friends and a sincere smile are enough to brighten up a day.

Reading your blog with your father makes me miss my father so much. My dad died 3 years ago and its difficult losing him. You are blessed that you can enjoy life with him still.

You're Dad looks strong at and vibrant for his age — many Filipinos at that age are mostly confined in their beds .
My father is very active and even drives, we worry that he has a good quality of life and that his mind is active, that is important for the elderly, apart from his monthly medical check-ups.

A time to give for them, the effort even if it is small, they would literary love it and it means so much to us.
