My second day on Margarita Island started with so much excitement. After a day of travel and getting settled, I felt more than ready to go out and explore everything this beautiful island has to offer. As always, the first thing I did was get ready, choose my outfit of the day, and of course, take a few photos at the hotel before heading out. Then I went down to the buffet for breakfast—something light but delicious—because I knew the day would be filled with walking, laughter, and discoveries.
Our first stop was one of the most historic and iconic places in Margarita: the Castle of San Carlos de Borromeo, located in Pampatar. From the moment we arrived, the view was already breathtaking. The castle sits right in front of the sea, making it not only a site rich in history but also a perfect spot for beautiful photos.
When we arrived, we were welcomed by a super friendly and funny tour guide. He made the whole tour more enjoyable and dynamic by sharing interesting and valuable details about the castle’s history. For example, we learned about its “air conditioning” system back in the day—a kind of natural ventilation that was quite clever for that time.
He also showed us the latrines used by the soldiers, the weapons and armor, a replica of the act of independence, and what impacted me the most: the cell where Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi was imprisoned. The guide passionately told us how, even while being held prisoner, Luisa managed to give birth in that cold and harsh place, and how an Indigenous woman helped her secretly pass information to her husband about where the Spaniards were hiding their weapons. That moment of the tour was very special to me because it made me reflect on the bravery of so many women throughout history.
Beyond all the historical content, I can’t leave out the view—it’s spectacular! From the top of the castle, you can see the sea in all its splendor, and the contrast between the ancient stone structure and the deep blue ocean is simply dreamy. Of course, we took tons of photos—of the castle and the scenery. Every corner is photogenic and filled with details that make you imagine what life was like there centuries ago.
This visit was definitely one of the most special moments of my trip. I love being able to mix tourism with history, learn while I enjoy, and capture memories with both my camera and my heart. If you ever visit Margarita, you must stop by the Castle of San Carlos de Borromeo. It’s an enriching, entertaining, and visually stunning experience.

Mi segundo día en la isla de Margarita comenzó con muchísima emoción. Después de un día de viaje y adaptación, ya me sentía más que lista para salir a conocer todo lo que esta hermosa isla tiene para ofrecer. Como siempre, lo primero fue alistarme, elegir mi outfit del día y, por supuesto, hacer unas fotos en el hotel antes de salir. Luego bajé al buffet para desayunar: algo ligero, pero delicioso, porque sabía que el día iba a estar lleno de caminatas, risas y descubrimientos. Nuestra primera parada fue uno de los lugares más históricos y emblemáticos de Margarita: el Castillo de San Carlos de Borromeo, ubicado en Pampatar. Desde que llegamos, la vista ya era impresionante. Este castillo está justo frente al mar, lo que lo hace no solo un sitio cargado de historia, sino también un lugar perfecto para capturar fotos hermosas. Al llegar, fuimos recibidos por un guía turístico súper amable y divertido. Nos hizo el recorrido mucho más ameno y dinámico, contándonos detalles muy curiosos y valiosos de la historia del castillo. Por ejemplo, aprendimos sobre cómo funcionaba su sistema de “aire acondicionado” en la época, que consistía en una especie de ventilación natural bastante ingeniosa para esos tiempos. También nos mostraron las letrinas utilizadas por los soldados, las armas y armaduras que se usaban, una réplica del acta de independencia y, lo que más me impactó, la celda donde estuvo encarcelada Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi. El guía nos contó con mucha pasión cómo, a pesar de estar prisionera, Luisa logró dar a luz en ese lugar tan frío y duro, y cómo una indígena la ayudó a hacer llegar información secreta a su esposo sobre dónde los españoles escondían sus armas. Fue un momento muy especial del recorrido porque me hizo reflexionar sobre la valentía de muchas mujeres en la historia. Además de todo el contenido histórico, no puedo dejar de mencionar la vista. ¡Es espectacular! Desde lo alto del castillo se puede ver el mar en todo su esplendor, y el contraste entre la estructura antigua de piedra y el azul intenso del mar es simplemente de ensueño. Por supuesto, aprovechamos para tomar muchas fotos, tanto del lugar como del paisaje. Cada rincón del castillo es fotogénico y lleno de detalles que invitan a imaginar cómo era la vida allí hace siglos. Definitivamente, esta visita fue uno de los momentos más especiales de mi viaje. Me encanta poder mezclar lo turístico con lo histórico, aprender mientras disfruto y capturar recuerdos con mi cámara y mi corazón. Si algún día visitas Margarita, no puedes dejar de pasar por el Castillo de San Carlos de Borromeo. Es una experiencia enriquecedora, entretenida y visualmente espectacular.
