A month later and the peacock is still hanging around

For over a month now, we have a male peacock just roaming around the homestead. Its routine is quite consistent, it comes down from its favorite pine tree around 8am. Goes for a walk, if the rains show up during the afternoon it takes cover near by. And then returns around 7pm to eat and then return to its tree before sundown.

That is its daily routine...

Not sure how much longer it will stick around for, but its well fed here so it may not leave.

We have been feeding it some cat food, it loves that. We recently bought some "game bird" food, but honestly the peacock prefers the cat food it seems.

Even trying to give it water has failed, we put out a bowl for it but just seems it wants to drink of puddles along the road.. lol

It is always watching, turning its head all around. And seems quite sensitive to noise.

When it site around it tends to prune itself.

I guess its looking for bugs that get under its feathers.

Amazing how much it can turn its head around to reach different parts of its body.

It has so many different kinds of feathers.

And looks quite funny digging through them.

The bird moves on and goes for a walk, I follow it for a bit.

I think its looking for that cat food on the ground.

Look at those talons, I do not want to be on the bad side of this bird.. Luckily its really nice and friendly.

Reminds me of a turkey.

Maybe its related to them as without its bright colors it looks so similar.

I wonder when it will grow back its long feathers.. It dropped them after mating season ended.

Well its just happy to walk around, eat cat food and drink from puddles.

I can get pretty close to it, around five feet away before it starts to casually walk away from me.

Ah yes, having a nice stretch after pruning itself for an hour.

And off it goes, the weather clears up and its out for a walk.

Finds itself over by my rotary rake, sometimes it likes to sit under the farm equipment.. lol

Hopefully it will take a liking to the bag of game bird feed we got.. It only comes in 50 pound bags, so we lots of it.

They are always adorable..one of the finest creation of the nature....it holds an immense significance in our culture. BTW u know keeping the feathers at home is considered to bring good luck. Well it is what said and followed here.

I feel peacock and Turkeys are from the same family.
They seem to have the same feathers, although I don't know if turkeys shed their showcasing feathers 😂😂

It's pretty cool to have a peacock just strutting around your yard😂

Ah cool. Yeah that is the big question. They are usually pets that escaped. Hard to say when that happened. It could be up to 15 years old. So may have been in the wild for a long time before it found us.

That is awesome, I've never had a peacock hang around my yard. I'm sure it likes the free food, though why it likes cat food over seeds is bizarre. I wonder where it came from, it had to be someone's pet that escaped, they sure aren't endemic to the US!

Yeah I think it was someone's escaped pet. Though I am surrounded by woods and there are very few people around me per square mile. So where it came from is a big mystery.

Nope always thought it was a male. It had its train of feathers when we first saw it and it was falling out looking for a mate.

The animal protein the cat food will help it grow feathers. That's why it prefers it over the game bird food.

Oh interesting okay. Well luckily it recently started eating the game bird feed. Looks like it still pecks through the grades for bugs though. So probably getting it's protein that way too.

The only options I have found near by are eggs that I could hatch. And would take them years before it would reach sexual maturity.

I think other birds will eat it too so I can leave some out and see what happens.
