Random Birds in the City

There are a great variety of species that either call this corner of BC home all year round or are migratory residents, who take up flight when the colder seasons approach. I don't consider myself a birder, but I try to take snapshots whenever I see them in hopes of spotting a rare specimen or interesting behaviour. In this post, I'm sharing various snapshots that I have collected throughout the past year. Enjoy!

These look like male and female wood ducks. The males have flashy feathers, and the females sport dainty touches of blue on their earthy plumage.

A red winged blackbird just waiting for a human to extend its hand in friendship, and if said hand happens to be full of seeds then even better.

In the background of the above photograph, you can see a structure with stairs. For a better view of this bird sanctuary, it's possible to go around the lakeshore and up to a viewing tower.

Leaving the outdoors for the indoor conservatory, I came across several exotic species that are usually found in the tropics. These are a few of the chatty residents that I encountered that day.

Then back outside where the cycle of life continues in idyllic surroundings. The Canada geese have made themselves at home with their chicks, which are numerous in spring. This is the time of the year when you want to give these birds their space because they become violently unpredictable and unpolite.

I end this feathered show with the elusive but very noisy Northern Flicker, whom I only spotted because of the bits of bark that were falling around the base of the tree.

This last one I captured on a separate hike. The best way to spot them is by following the incessant pecking reverberating among the trees. I really like their work ethic and productivity.

Thank you for visiting!

I like how the geese sitting down have their wings open. I had never seen this behaviour before. They seemed to be having a relaxing time.
