Golubac Sea

It’s fascinating that this particular stretch of the Danube is known locally as a sea. And it really is a special place for birds. The immense width of the river, flanked by high banks, creates a unique microclimate where rare bird species can be found.
A couple of years ago, in May, I was strolling along the promenade near Golubac Fortress when I spotted a pair of swans. They were lingering close to the shore, foraging among the waterweeds.
At one point, they both turned and headed towards the middle of the river. As they gradually shrank to tiny white dots, it suddenly struck me just how vast the Danube feels here.
I suppose this is exactly how I’ll always remember the Golubac Sea: the high banks, the wide river, and two white swans slowly disappearing into the distance.
