El cisne negro // The black swan

https://play.3speak.tv/embed?v=enraizar/20cll3rd

On yet another hot afternoon during a summer that was already starting to wear on me, I made my way into Madrid’s El Retiro Park. Adjacent to the Atocha train station—renamed Almudena Grandes in honor of the popular Madrid-born writer—and close to the Pacífico neighborhood and Cibeles, El Retiro offers a momentary respite from the sweltering summer days.

Among the thousands of visitors who, during the hottest season of the year, flock to El Retiro in search of welcome shade or a brief moment of tranquility, we can spot all kinds of creatures—even the most unexpected ones.

That day in August, just a few steps into the park, I saw the hunter and the big bad wolf sitting around a table, facing two cans of beer and what appeared to be an empty bag of potato chips. The scene struck me as quite strange—enough to make my curiosity prompt me to approach them and strike up a conversation.

I was greeted warmly, though I kept a certain physical distance. The wolf, although he was quite friendly throughout, didn’t exactly put me at ease.

IMG_20260805_195839.jpg

The conversation, which was quite lively, gave me the chance to ask about Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma.

As for Grandma, they told me that at that hour—around 7:30 p.m.—she’d still be in bed. They explained that, since she used to play in illegal poker games at night, she was in the habit of sleeping until sunset.

What they told me about Little Red Riding Hood surprised me even more. Apparently, the girl from the story was no longer the sweet, innocent girl I knew. She was in the thick of her teenage years, went by the name of “Dark Little Red Riding Hood,” dressed entirely in black, and listened to Joy Division nonstop…

1000137825.jpg

When this entertaining conversation came to an end and I walked away from the two men, I said to myself: “How much things have changed!”

But… “How much have my own circumstances changed?” I wondered.

I remember a wonderful movie, The Asphalt Jungle. In it, Sam Jaffe, after getting out of prison, sets in motion the “perfect heist.”

Jaffe is a meticulous person, possessing extreme rationality. He planned the coup for years while he was in prison. No detail has been left to chance; it’s perfect. On the surface, nothing can go wrong…

IMG_20260805_200041.jpg

But every script needs the right characters to come to life, and in this film, we don’t discover Sam Jaffe’s true life story through the meticulous planning of the heist, but rather through the people he surrounded himself with…

The further the film progresses, the more we learn about the web of relationships and desires among the entire cast… the more we begin to sense the ending… where a whole chain of events—which take on the “appearance” of bad luck—inevitably leads.

“Hero” scripts also need the right supporting characters for the protagonist. What would James Bond be without his antagonists? Without them and without the “Bond” girls, there would be no Agent 007.

1786000482241.jpg

My encounter with the hunter and the big bad wolf turned my thoughts toward my own story, toward my own “movie.”

Am I, like Roger Moore or Sam Jaffe, trapped inside a script? Or perhaps my novel is more like the story of the hunter and the big bad wolf… maybe “free,” maybe held captive by a new script I know nothing about.

Without a doubt, I am aware that, at the very least, I have played two roles for many years. We’ll call one the “compliant” one—a good boy, very bright in his studies, a boy who strove to “deserve” a crumb of love. Then came the “rebel,” an angry teenager… ready to overthrow all authority… his parents.

1786000482174.jpg

Today, now that death has granted me light, at a time when there is nothing left to prove, after the foundations of the past have crumbled and the old idols have been toppled, now that I have been reunited with my parents… Accompanied by light and shadow, I will speak about my new film.

It wasn’t that many years ago that my cynical adventure began. I’ll share a couple of anecdotes attributed to Diogenes, which may explain both my new screenplay and the inevitable end of this new adventure if nothing changes.

  • They say that Diogenes attended a lecture in which an expert—as we would say today—was explaining a very peculiar theory to his audience: that motion does not exist. So Diogenes stood up and walked out.

  • On another occasion, Diogenes was asked why he begged for alms from statues, and he replied: - “I’m getting used to being rejected.”

As my visit to the park was coming to an end, a beautiful black swan swam closer. I liked to think that, for a moment, that elegant creature had strayed from its usual routine. It had preferred my presence to that of the dozens of tourists, laden with their breadcrumbs.

I didn't know Grandma used to fall asleep because of her love for card games—the things one discovers! And well, Little Red Riding Hood finally grew up and became a teenager; that is truly tragic—there’s nothing quite like dealing with a teenage girl, good grief... I wonder what the other person saw when Diogenes got up and walked away. They surely saw him frozen in time, since nothing moves...

The swan preferred your company; even they flee the hustle and bustle of the world.

Saludos caballero

Good evening, Yolernis. Well, yes, the grandmother's nighttime activity surprised me too, though I'm happy for her... As for Little Red Riding Hood, it reminds me of my own adolescence... so I understand you perfectly. I’d like to think the same about Black Swan, too.

Sending you a big hug!

Wow, I love movie theaters too, but they don't chase me around—and wow, I haven't run into the wolf and the hunter either; I don't know what's going on, but young people's lives are so boring—how exciting. I love playing cards too, but during the day; I sleep at night.

Salud y bienestar @enraizar ¿Andersen?

The swan is undoubtedly not only beautiful but wise as well; it chose wholesome company rather than accepting the handouts of breadcrumbs—said to be harmful to waterfowl—that others might offer. If I were named Félix, I would be more wary of the hunter than the wolf. And I would never ask them about the little girl and the grandmother who complicated their lives.
I keep the anecdote about Diogenes in reserve for the next persistent panhandler who crosses my path. The last one was so brazen that his arguments and promises of blessings turned into a curse when faced with a refusal of his impertinent insistence.
So much magic held within the Parque del Buen Retiro.

Health and well-being, @enraizar. Andersen?

Salud y bienestar enraizar@enraizar ¿Andersen? 🤔😅

Good evening, my dear friend @felixmarranz. I like to think that the unexpected happened that afternoon... and the swan traded crumbs for good company... As for the anecdote about the statue, I hadn't considered its usefulness... but I'll make a note of it.

Health and well-being enraizar@enraizar Andersen? 🤔😅

Thank you very much, my friend.

I hope you enjoy a wonderful start to the week.

We can change the script of our lives when we realise that there is a pre-existing script, one we chose a long time ago, and we become spectators of that script; we look at it from the outside and wave a magic wand so that the swan appears and gives us a message. Most people live out the script without ever questioning anything. It’s only when we start to question things that we can change it. The story of Little Red Riding Hood isn’t the same for everyone; it depends on our inner journey. You’ve created a new script, and that’s what matters. A big hug! 🤗

Siempre agradecida. Un abrazo.

That movie you mentioned looks really interesting, I'll have to check it out. I liked your short review; a well-planned heist, interesting. Hey, if you see The Wolf and the Hunter again, send my regards. That grandma sure knows how to enjoy her nights, hehehe, and Little Red Riding Hood should relax, hehehe.

Good morning, @angeluxx. Be careful if you watch the movie The Asphalt Jungle; you might not like it—it’s a very different style of filmmaking compared to today's—but you also run the risk of getting hooked on film noir... I see Grandma every night; I’ve just finished our poker game... I’ve already said hello to her, and I’ll say hello to Little Red Riding Hood when I see her.

I hope you have a lovely Tuesday.
