Semur-en-Auxois, the Medieval Soul of Burgundy (Part 2)

Hard to get lost in this little medieval gem, so we just let our whims guide us. With my wife, we stroll along the Armançon, calm on the surface as it winds at the foot of the stone ramparts. The water mirrors the old houses clinging to the granite promontory, and it’s easy to imagine how fierce the floods must be when the river gets angry — the locals must fear it as much as they love it.

It’s peaceful, a bit out of time. Perfect for wandering, sitting in the sun, and watching the world go by with a drink in hand. And of course, for taking photos — I can’t resist, every turn reveals a new view, a new postcard.

Difficile de se perdre dans ce petit bijou médiéval, aussi nous laissons-nous guider au gré de nos envies. Avec mon épouse, nous longeons l’Armançon, paisible en apparence, serpentant au pied des remparts de pierre. L’eau reflète les vieilles maisons accrochées au promontoire de granit, et l’on imagine sans peine ce que doivent être les crues quand la rivière se fâche — les habitants doivent la redouter autant qu’ils l’aiment.

C’est tranquille, un peu hors du monde. Idéal pour flâner, pour s’asseoir au soleil et regarder passer le temps, un verre à la main. Et bien sûr, pour sortir l’appareil photo — je ne m’en prive pas, chaque détour offre un nouveau point de vue, une nouvelle carte postale.
