The History and Mythology of Parsley
Hey dear community, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope you had a day that brought one or the other experience into your life! In this post, I would like to go into the history and mythology of a plant and hope that you are able to expand a little.
Here are some pictures of parsley which is also known under the scientific name Petroselinum crispum and was already known among the ancient Romans or Greeks and probably the traces can even be traced back several thousands of years and it originally comes from the Mediterranean region. During the Middle Ages the people realized what a great medical potential it has and they started to cultivate it more and more, began to extract the oil and used it against different diseases and a few hundred years later it has become more and more popular and was used as a dish for food and nowadays it is almost indispensable and widespread. In the Middle Ages it was still associated with negative things and it looks different with the ancient Greece where it was considered a sacred plant which can also bring luck if you carry the leaves with you. It is even suspected that it was often worn at festivals and at that time wreaths were made from it which were supposed to protect against negative influences or it was also used to reward the winners in competitions and also the nymph Calypso had jewelry made of parsley. There is also a story that revolves around the origin and according to a legend it originated from the blood of the prince Opheltes who fell to the ground when he was killed by a snake and it was also used as an aphrodisiac at that time and was also associated with the goddess of the underworld Persephone. Parsley was also mentioned at that time by the Roman scholar Pliny the elder and in the Roman mythology there are similar legends in which it was used as jewelry and it can allegedly help against the negative effects of drunkenness and was given to the gladiators for their fight to protect them better and there were also legends that it would help to more strength. In general, it was also often revered as a magical plant that has supernatural powers and it was also often used at weddings or other rituals and has shaped the history.
