Mountains have aroused the fascination and inspiration of people for thousands of years and are also an important part of the history of art and many painters, poets, authors and other artists have made the mountains a role model. At the beginning, it must be mentioned that it is not a separate art movement in this sense but can be placed in the category of landscape painting and mountains have been artfully depicted for centuries, but the first realistic paintings of mountain landscapes can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Snow-covered mountains beautify pretty much every natural view and create a powerful atmosphere and every artist is of course open whether he is oriented like simple rocks or entire mountain ranges. It is not always about depicting mountains alone and often they are represented rather subliminally and at a distance and the focus of the artwork refers to something completely different in the foreground such as people, meadows, trees or other objects. In order to create the most authentic overall picture possible, the artist uses the appropriate stylistic devices such as the right colors, shades, contrasts and it is also important to pay attention to the effect on the viewer such as mood, perception and also experiences that are linked to mountains are often presented in the foreground like mountaineers, climbers or other things you can experience and popular are also often lonely mountain huts or lakes to create mood. Many artists are also oriented towards the valley and here too they move into the background and mountains are also often associated with different mythologies and this is also often an influencing factor and the fascination of mountains has also shaped numerous other art epochs until modern times and the topic became particularly popular in the 19th century and well-known painters who were inspired by it were Claude Monet (1840 - 1926), Albrecht Dürrer (1471 - 1528), William Turner (1775 - 1851) and many more.
