Graffitour, Comuna 13. Formerly "La Cuna de Pablo Escobar" (Pablo Escobar's Cradle).

I was looking for new places to visit in the city and I found one of the most visited tourist attractions. The Graffitour in the Comuna 13, years before this commune was the center of many wars between guerrilla groups for territories, armed clashes for control, also was present the drug trafficking of Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel. All this is in the past, a dark past that has been forgotten, one of the most conflictive points became today the most visited tourist spot in Medellin for its history, the Graffitour.

Estaba buscando nuevos lugares por visitar en la ciudad y conseguí una de las atracciones turísticas más visitadas. El Graffitour en la Comuna 13, años anteriores dicha comuna fue el centro de muchas guerras entre grupos guerrilleros por territorios, enfrentamientos armados por control, también estaba presente el narcotrafico del cartel de Medellín de Pablo Escobar. Todo esto queda en el pasado, un pasado oscuro que se ha olvidado, uno de los puntos más conflictivos se convirtió hoy en día en el punto turístico más visitado de Medellín por su historia, el Graffitour.

Having heard all about the Graffitour I decided to visit the place and give it a chance to surprise me. I don't like to ask for directions and even less in a country where I don't know anyone or the intentions they might have, so when I want to go to a location I just use Google Maps, I live in Comuna 13 so the Graffitour was in my area.

Ya habiendo escuchado de todo sobre el Graffitour decidí ir a visitar el lugar y darle la oportunidad de sorprenderme. No me gusta preguntar direcciones y menos en un país donde no conozco a nadie ni las intenciones que podrían tener, así que cuando quiero ir a una ubicación simplemente me guió con el Google Maps, yo vivo en la Comuna 13 así que el Graffitour me quedaba en mi zona.

I put the location and start walking, I had to walk up the streets of the neighborhoods that once ran blood. It is not difficult to distinguish when you are already near the entrance of the tour, you easily see hundreds of street vendors with prices expressed in dollars and high prices for being a tourist spot. I didn't want to buy anything for fear of wasting money, I only bought a Monster energy drink, but I drank it with regret. When you are already on the road even the dumbest would know why they gave that name to this tourist attraction, walls and walls full of graffiti, artistic designs that I could appreciate, they were not like the typical ones I usually see normally that I simply consider them vandalism, here you could see the dedication, passion and unique style in each design.

Pongo la ubicación y comienzo a caminar, tuve que subir por las calles de los barrios que alguna vez corría sangre. No es difícil distinguir cuando ya estas cerca de la entrada del tour, ves fácilmente a cientos de vendedores ambulantes con precios expresados en dólares y precios elevados por ser punto de turistas. No quise comprar nada por miedo al malgastar, solamente compré una bebida energética Monster, pero me la bebí arrepentido. Cuando ya estas en el camino hasta el más tonto sabría porqué le dieron dicho nombre a ese atracción turística, paredes y paredes llenas de graffitis, diseños artísticos que pude apreciar, no eran como los típicos que suelo ver normalmente que simplemente los considero vandalismo, acá se notaba la dedicación, la pasión y el estilo único en cada diseño.

The main attraction of the place are the escalators, the contrast of the neighborhood with the stairs is somewhat hilarious but interesting, as it is unusual that in areas like this there is such modernism. It was several stops, as you go down and up to the next stairs, at each stop you could observe different stores, food stalls, and something called neon rooms, which are dark rooms with graffiti and illuminated only from a black light, thus making a graffiti room come to life, bright fluorescent art, very impressive, if I could give a number there were over 20 such rooms between all the way up the stairs, each one designed by different artists. Very impressive.

La principal atracción del lugar son las escaleras eléctricas, el contraste del barrio con las escaleras es algo hilarante pero interesante, ya que es inusual que en zonas como esta allá tal modernismo. Fueron varias paradas, mientras bajas y subes a las siguientes escaleras, en cada parada se podía observar distintas tiendas, puestos de comida, y algo llamado cuartos de neón, que son habitaciones oscuras con graffitis e iluminado solamente de una luz negra, haciendo así una habitación de graffiti que cobran vida, arte fluorescente brillante, muy impresionante, si pudiera dar un número había más de 20 habitaciones así entre todo el camino de las escaleras, cada uno diseñada por artistas diferentes. Muy impresionante.

Getting to the top was not as impressive as I thought it would be, as there was nothing but a very busy lookout point and food stalls, again, the goal was the path and not the goal. As I descended I was able to see new areas that I didn't detail and I was able to eat lunch at the most affordable restaurant I could find. It was an interesting experience, if you get to visit Colombia and Medellin, I highly recommend you to visit the Graffitour.

Llegar a la cima no fue tan impresionante como creí, ya que no había más nada que un mirador muy ocupado y puestos de comida, otra vez, el objetivo fue el camino y no la meta. Al descender pude observar nuevas zonas que no detalle y pude comer un almuerzo en el restaurante con precios más accesibles que conseguí. Fue una experiencia interesante, si llegan a visitar Colombia y Medellín, les recomiendo mucho visitar el Graffitour.
