Book Review: Powerless & Powerful by Lauren Roberts [eng/esp]
Hello, everyone! I hope you are all doing well in this Hive Book Club community. Today, I want to talk to you about two books I read about a month ago, Powerless and Powerful, which are mainly fantasy and romance novels. They were quite an experience for me, and I want to share them with you, starting with the fact that I had never done a reading tandem before. If you don't know what that is, it involves reading two books at the same time, alternating chapters from each book according to a guide so that you can enjoy the reading much more, because the events in the two books happen at the same time but are narrated by different people. I explain this because I didn't know what a reading tandem was until I read these two books. Now, I'm going to start talking to you about Powerless.
Powerless gives us as a protagonist Paedyn Gray, who lives in the kingdom of Ilya, a place which is divided by the “Elites” and the “Vulgar”. The elites are those with powers, whether offensive, defensive or mundane, being the mundanes the least powerful of these, but still they are elites, since they have some power; on the other hand, the vulgar, like our protagonist Paedyn, have no power and are not wanted in this kingdom, so they live hidden or go to other lands. Paedyn pretends to have the power of “mental” and steals some things to survive in the slums together with her friend Adena. One day, by accident, on the streets she unknowingly saved a prince of Ilya, Kai Azer, the future executor of the kingdom, who is our protagonist. After this, Paedyn is known to all, and is forced to participate in the trials of the purge. This brutal competition exists to demonstrate the powers of the elites, and, as you know, Paedyn has none, so she finds herself having to survive these trials while discovering some things about her past and fighting her feelings for Kai.

Hoy quiero hablarles sobre estos dos libros que leí hace aproximadamente un mes, Powerless y Powerful, libros que tienen como género principal la fantasía y el romance. Los cuales fueron toda una experiencia para mí y se los quiero compartir, empezando porque nunca había hecho un tándem de lectura, y si no sabes qué es esto, se trata de leer dos libros al mismo tiempo, intercalando los capítulos de cada libro según una guía para poder disfrutar mucho más la lectura, debido a que los acontecimientos de los dos libros pasan al mismo tiempo, pero están narrados por diferentes personas. Lo explicó porque yo no sabía qué era un tándem de lectura hasta que leí estos dos libros. Ahora sí, voy a empezar a hablarles sobre Powerless.
Powerless nos da como protagonista a Paedyn Gray, la cual vive en el reino de Ilya, lugar el cual está dividido por los "Élites" y los "Vulgares". Los élites son aquellos con poderes, ya sean ofensivos, defensivos o mundanos, siendo los mundanos los menos poderosos de estos, pero aun así son élites, ya que tienen algún poder; en cambio, los vulgares, como nuestra protagonista Paedyn, no tienen ningún poder y no son queridos en este reino, por lo que viven ocultos o se van a otras tierras. Paedyn finge tener el poder de "mental" y roba algunas cosas para sobrevivir en los barrios bajos junto con su amiga Adena. Un día, por accidente, en las calles salvó a un príncipe de Ilya sin saberlo, Kai Azer, el futuro ejecutor del reino, el cual es nuestro protagonista. Tras esto, Paedyn es conocida por todos, y se ve obligada a participar en las pruebas de la purga. Esta brutal competición existe para demostrar los poderes de los elites, y, como ya saben, Paedyn no tiene ninguno, por lo que se encuentra teniendo que sobrevivir a estas pruebas mientras descubre algunas cosas de su pasado y lucha contra sus sentimientos hacia Kai.
For me personally, from the beginning the synopsis caught me a lot and not to mention the book itself; the way in which Padeyn plays his mental role to lie to others and survive seems to me very good, and not to mention our protagonist Kai, which for me is a poet, because every time he spoke, I was underlining that line. In each test of the purge I felt that tension of not knowing what was going to happen or how was the test as such, if there could be any trap or not. Plus it's also quite an experience that Paedyn, being from all her life from the slums, because of the trials, is taken to the castle and knows what it's like to be royalty and all the luxuries they have, or how ignorant the others are with all that is lived in the slums, certainly something very unfair. I highly recommend reading this book; even though it's fantasy and you have to slowly figure out the powers and such, I had no trouble reading it. Also, the book has some twists that just from the synopsis you can't imagine, so you have to read the book to discover them.
Now Powerful, this is a short novella and not part of the Powerless trilogy as such, but I read it anyway to get the full story. Powerful gives us as a protagonist Adena, Paedyn's best friend who was left alone in the slums. This one is quite affected, since she only knew Pae, and she doesn't know how to steal as well as she does, so she was going to have a hard time surviving and waiting to see if her friend survived the trials, and I say “was” because she ends up meeting our protagonist, Makoto. They get together because Makoto also has an important person participating in the trials, so they make a plan to be able to go see their loved ones. They meet and form a relationship, which can be affected because Makoto may not have been completely honest and also because none of them expected all the feelings they had when they saw each other or were together.
A mí en lo personal, desde un inicio la sinopsis me atrapó un montón y ni hablar del libro en sí; la manera en la que Padeyn hace su papel de mental para mentirles a los demás y sobrevivir me parece muy buena, y ni hablar de nuestro protagonista Kai, el cual para mí es todo un poeta, ya que cada vez que hablaba, yo estaba subrayando esa línea. En cada prueba de la purga sentí esa tensión de no saber qué iba a pasar o cómo era la prueba como tal, si podía haber alguna trampa o no. Además de que también es toda una experiencia que Paedyn, siendo de toda su vida de los barrios bajos, debido a las pruebas, es llevada al castillo y conoce lo que es ser de la realeza y todos los lujos que tienen, o lo ignorantes que son los demás con todo lo que se vive en los barrios bajos, sin duda algo muy injusto. Recomiendo un montón leer este libro; aunque sea de fantasía y tengas que entender poco a poco los poderes y así, no me costó nada leerlo. Además, el libro tiene algunos giros que simplemente por la sinopsis no te imaginas, así que tienes que leer el libro para descubrirlos.
Ahora Powerful, esta es una novela corta y que no forma parte como tal de la trilogía de Powerless, pero igual la leí para tener la historia completa. Powerful nos da como protagonista a Adena, la mejor amiga de Paedyn que quedó sola en los barrios bajos. Esta se ve bastante afectada, ya que solo conocía a Pae, y no sabe robar tan bien como ella, por lo que le iba a costar mucho sobrevivir y esperar a ver si su amiga sobrevivía a las pruebas, y digo "iba" porque termina conociendo a nuestro protagonista, Makoto. Estos se unen debido a que Makoto también tiene una persona importante participando en las pruebas, por lo que hacen un plan para poder ir a ver a sus seres queridos. Estos se conocen y generan una relación, la cual se puede ver afectada porque tal vez Makoto no haya sido sincero del todo y además porque ninguno esperaba todos los sentimientos que tenían cuando se veían o estaban juntos.
I found Makoto and Adena's relationship to be beautiful, seeing how they get to know each other in such difficult circumstances as having a loved one in trials where you don't know if he or she will survive. In addition, they help each other to survive in the slums. Now, as for the ending of this book, it is quite unexpected and that's where I think the magic of having read the two books at the same time comes in, because both have the same ending, but each protagonist lives and feels it in a totally different way and I think you really enjoy reading Powerless and Powerful together. Something that I don't think would happen if you read first one and then the other, because by the time you read Powerful, you will already know the ending it will have in part, but you can decide how you want to read it. From my side, I recommend you to do a tandem reading.
I gave Powerless 5 out of 5 stars, because I never stopped finding the whole story interesting; the way the book is written to describe places or powers left me fascinated, and not to mention that every time Kai and Paedyn talked or interacted, I was very happy. I gave powerful 4.5 out of 5 stars; even though it's a short novel, it told you what you needed to know about each one, and you can tell how the main characters are slowly connecting. At this point I've read the whole Powerless trilogy; maybe I'll tell you about the next books and how this story continues. I hope you liked this post and thank you for reading this review.

La relación de Makoto y Adena me pareció de lo más bonita, el ver cómo se van conociendo en unas circunstancias tan difíciles como lo es tener a un ser querido en unas pruebas en las que no sabes si va a sobrevivir. Además, estos se ayudan mutuamente para sobrevivir en los barrios bajos. Ahora, en cuanto al final de este libro, es bastante inesperado y es ahí en donde yo creo que entra la magia de haber leído los dos libros al mismo tiempo, porque ambos tienen el mismo final, pero cada protagonista lo vive y siente de una manera totalmente diferente y considero que se disfruta muchísimo leyendo Powerless y Powerful en conjunto. Cosa que no creo que pasaría si lees primero uno y después el otro, porque para cuando leas Powerful, ya conocerás el final que va a tener en parte, pero ya podrás decidir tú cómo lo quieres leer. De mi parte, te recomiendo hacer un tándem de lectura.
A Powerless le di 5 de 5 estrellas, porque nunca me dejó de parecer interesante toda la historia; la forma en que está escrito el libro para describirte los lugares o los poderes me dejó fascinada, y ni hablar de que cada vez que Kai y Paedyn hablaban o interactuaban, era muy feliz. A powerful le di 4.5 de 5 estrellas; aunque sea una novela corta, te contaba lo necesario de cada uno, y puedes notar cómo poco a poco se van conectando los protagonistas. En este momento ya me leí toda la trilogía de Powerless; tal vez les hable sobre los siguientes libros y de cómo continúa esta historia.
