A Morning Among the Roses

Last weekend turned out to be unexpectedly wholesome and refreshing, all thanks to an impromptu stop at a plant nursery with my mom. We were actually out for some other work, one of those errands that you think will take an hour but somehow ends up eating your entire morning. We hadn’t even planned to go out for long, but you know how it goes. And on our way back home, we spotted this nursery by the roadside.

At the entrance, there was a collection of Bonsai trees that immediately caught my eye. I always admire these tiny trees, shaped and styled so carefully. They're like miniature forests and they never fail to impress me. You could tell they required so much attention and patience to maintain, and I kind of get why people are obsessed with them. I stood there for a bit just looking at them before we went in.

Though the nursery carried plenty of types of flowering plants, we didn't have too much time to visit every part of it, and for that matter, we were sort of on a mission. My mom particularly had her heart set on purchasing rose plants, and as soon as we got to the rose section, that was it.

My Mom got busy carefully examining the leaves, rotating the pots to check if the stems were sturdy, and checking the buds to select the best ones. There was also a woman working there who took the time to show my mom around, pointing out different plants and patiently answering all the questions she had.

While my mom was doing her thing, I, of course, woke up the inner photographer in me and started clicking pictures. How could I not? Everything around was just so pretty. It was the perfect monsoon day. The air was fresh, the soil was still damp from a light drizzle, and tiny droplets clung to the leaves and petals, making the greenery look even more lush and alive. I love days like that.

It’s hard not to feel like you’re a half-decent photographer when your model is nature at its prettiest, showing off its best side. It was impossible to take a bad picture that day. Honestly, choosing which photos to add to this post was the real struggle because I loved every single one of them and wanted to post them all. But don’t worry, I was kind enough to spare you the onslaught! Although, believe me, it took a lot of self-control not to upload an entire gallery here.

The roses were lovely! So manyyy different colours and shades. Mix of shades. Some were dark red, some were pale pink, and some were light yellow, each one flowering elegantly in the rain-cooled air. They looked so fresh and bright.

My favourite ones were these white with pale pink borders. So absolutely pretty, I could stare at them for a loooonngggg time. I kept going back to look at them again before leaving.

While wandering through the nursery, we also came across a small section dedicated to hydroponic farming, which was honestly pretty cool. Growing plants without soil, just water, nutrients, and a lot of science. So cool. We wanted to go inside but this area was closed off for customers.

Spotted these pretty Gazania flowers, also known as African daisies. They’re so sunflower-like, just in a smaller, cuter form.

All in all, it turned out to be such a nice way to spend a random weekend morning. We came back home feeling happy and with a couple of new plants in hand, so it was a win.

Your mom sounds like the loveliest plant shopper, so thorough and gentle in choosing her roses. I can almost imagine her rotating the pots, inspecting each bud like a treasure hunter. And, I can relate to your inner photographer coming alive in places like that. Nature knows how to pose for the camera. 📸🌸
